Rectigrade - adj. Moving In A Straight Line
By Beriaearwen
“How, even, is this our life?” Buffy asked, a note of humor in her voice as she swung the scythe in a strong forehand, dismembering one of the demons in front of her and beheading the other.
“You know how this is our life, Buffster,” came Xander’s cheery reply as he beheaded the demon in front of him and parried the claws of another. The strength of that block knocking him back a few steps and leaving him back to back with Buffy.
“Blow up one little Hellmouth,” Buffy grumbled, ducking a swipe as she lunged the pointy end of the scythe into a demon’s chest, piercing its heart.
“And you merge with another world,” Dawn called out to the duo as she race past, chasing after a demon.
“The Avengers are only a block away with their aliens,” Willow informed, slightly breathless as she made her way through the fight to her friends’ sides. “We need to make sure their tech stays away from these guys’ amulet.”
“Do we want to know?” Xander asked, beheading a demon.
“No idea other than bad,” Willow admitted. “Just wanted to update you. I give it about five minutes before the aliens arrive, unless Hulk -”
Her comment was cut off when there was a deafening roar and two alien bodies came flying directly at them. “Duck!” Buffy called.
Willow and Xander instantly did so and the two aliens went flying over the original Scoobies’ heads, crashing into the demons who had been attacking. There was some indignant howling and the already chaotic battle just became more so as the demons charged toward the aliens, the aliens charged the demons and the Scoobies and Avengers ended up fighting both.
“Do you think we can blame this on Ethan?” Buffy asked, thinking of the chaos mage who had escaped yet again from Initiative custody.
“I think we generate enough chaos on our own that we should be getting fan mail from the chaos gods,” Xander replied, ducking the swing of a demon and knocking a ray-gun type of device out of an alien hand.
“Guys, the alien tech is headed toward the mystical do-dad!” Faith called as she battled past them, taking on two demons and an alien.
“Where are they?” Buffy asked.
“They should meet up about twenty yards to your right,” Xander said, having spotted the two groups. “This can’t be good.”
“Is it ever?” Buffy asked.

“What are these things?” Natasha asked. She and the other Avengers had found an enclave of aliens who had build some destructive technology and somehow their battle ended up spilling onto the streets.
“Demons,” Steve said, his voice and face serious.
“Demons? Really?” Rhodey asked, his voice dripping with disbelief as he twisted mid-air to avoid a blast and sent a blast of his own into a group of aliens.
“As a heart attack,” Clint’s voice assured over the coms.
“You knew about this?” Sam asked, landing next to Natasha long enough to drop her a weapon before taking off again to attack the aliens.
“Nope,” she gasped, having taken a hit to the stomach. “But I’m beginning to believe.”
“Who has eyes on the tech?” Steve asked, throwing his shield to take out both demons and aliens and give them enough room to take a breath.
“It’s about twenty yards to your right and closing with something the demons are protecting,” Clint’s voice informed. “Some of the other group are headed that way as well.”
“Let’s see if we can work together on this,” Steve advised as ducked a flying alien that Hulk had decided to toss instead of smash.

Buffy and Steve caught sight of each other as they made their way to where the two groups seemed to be meeting.
Recognizing the man, Buffy briefly hoped that in addition to his other enhancements, his hearing was a better than average and that the noise of the battle hadn’t temporarily deadened it. “Captain America,” she called, relieved when he darted his eyes in her direction and nodded. “We can’t let the alien tech and the demon challis come into contact.”
“What kind of bad would it be?” he called back, not sure she could hear him.
“Don’t know, just that it would be bad.”
“Right. I’ll see what I can do about the tech, you see to the challis.”
“Agreed,” Buffy replied, focusing her attention once more fully on getting to the challis.
Both Steve and Buffy had to stop suddenly when a bus came in their direction, crashing to the ground ten feet in front of them. Both managed to keep their feet as the impact made the ground heave.
They exchanged a worried glance and both took off running, plowing through the enemies in their way and both vaulted onto the bus.
Their trajectories had been such that they ended up side by side.
Looking over the chaos on the other side, a feeling of horror swept over Buffy. “Crap,” was all she had time to say before the alien tech came in contact with the demon challis.
Steve grabbed Buffy around the waist and pulled her close, crouching down and holding up his shield in defense moments before a blinding light burst forth from where the two different technologies came into contact.
Due to her smaller size, and partially Steve being in the way, Buffy was fully protected by the shield from the blast, Steve was only mostly so.
When the light finally died down, Buffy blinked her eyes to clear the spots.
She was facing away from where the explosion had taken place and could see that the bus must have blocked the majority of it. She was able to spot her people doing a bit of clean-up on the aliens and demons. She also spotted some of the Avengers doing the same.
Turning toward the other side of the bus, it was complete devastation. Or at least she thought it had been. There had only been aliens and demons on this side of the bus, now there were… larva? And eggs?
Buffy’s eyes widened at what that meant as well as the fact she hadn’t seen Captain America.
Looking down, she spotted a little boy who couldn’t be more than three, looking up at her with tears forming in his eyes and practically swimming in Captain America’s uniform. “Oh… boy,” she corrected her language at the last minute.
The boy’s bottom lip began to tremble and he raised his arms, obviously wanting comfort.
Unable to deny him, Buffy reached down and, making sure to keep the uniform covering the toddler, lifted him up, settling him on her hip so his head rested on her shoulder. She rubbed circles on his back and spoke softly to him, no idea what she was saying.
A man with wings on his back landed next to her. “Is that...?”
“Captain America,” she confirmed.
“Oh, boy.”
“Yep.”

Thank you mods and writers for all your efforts this month. I greatly appreciated them and am a little baffled as to how August managed to go by so quickly. Great job everyone!
