Shady Hill Cemetery
The last couple weeks had been a challenge for Peter. School was a breeze, but the supernatural issues more than made up for it. Witches trying to relive their glory days as cheerleaders; giant preying mantises going after virgins - he successfully avoided the question about his own sexuality, but Xander was embarrassed that he was one of her victims.
But since he wasn’t having trouble keeping up in class, he used the time to work on his own projects. His holy water-based webbing was still causing trouble. Something about the solution wasn’t gelling quite right. He had a few more tests to run before he gave up, though.
Tonight was the culmination of his first engineering binge in this dimension. If it worked, even the rest of the gang could help with the slaying. He wouldn’t encourage it, of course, but they could. He got the idea after listening to Buffy and Giles explain the different methods of killing vampires.
They had visited two cemeteries before they ran into a crowd of vampires large enough to warrant a test. He reached into his pocket, activated the device and yelled to Buffy, “Count to 5 and close your eyes!” After five seconds, he shouted, “Now!”
He turned away to keep from being blinded by the UV bomb he just set off. It was strictly light, so they didn’t have to worry about shrapnel injuring any non-vampiric bystanders. The light itself, though, could temporarily blind somebody, which could be bad.
Once the flash was over, he opened his eyes again, and could see smoky ashes falling to the ground all around them. Cool!
“What was that?” Buffy demanded, sounding a little peeved, but mostly excited.
Peter smiled at her and quipped, “Portable sun; what every Slayer needs to wipe out a vampire nest with little to no trouble at all.”
“This…could be our ace up the sleeve in going after the Master,” she pointed out with a wicked grin. “Do you have any more of those handy?
He shook his head. “This was just a prototype to see if it would work. I should be able to make a few more in a couple days, though.”
“Awesome!”
After the disaster of a date with Owen, Buffy was moping in the library, bummed that the first guy she was fluttery about turned out to be a thrill seeker. Not a good option when dating as a Slayer. But at least she got the vicious little boost to her ego that he picked her over Cordelia - even before the Slayer thing reared its pointy teeth.
“I’ve got ‘em,” Peter exclaimed as he burst into the room. “Wanna go hunting?” he asked.
“Sure, why not?” she replied despondently. “It’s not as if I have a social life or anything.”
“What’s wrong?” he inquired sympathetically. He had been so focused on the SB (sun-bombs) the last couple days that he didn’t witness the rise and fall of Buffy’s first romantic entanglement, or the prophecy concerning the Anointed One.
On their way to the crypt where they encountered the vessel vamp, Buffy filled him in.
“That’s nothing. My first date was with a senior and her dad drove us to the homecoming dance. Turns out he was the villain guy I had been fighting for the last few weeks. To make matters worse, he guessed that I was Spiderman,” Peter said.
“How did it turn out?”
“I ditched Liz because he was doing something evil and I had to stop him, and then…it was just too awkward between us after that,” he admitted. “Even though it was her dad’s fault, I still felt guilty about him ruining her life.”
They had just put on their sunglasses and tossed their SBs into the cavern where a super ugly vampire was holding court with a bunch of other vampires (so they were betting he was the Master), when Buffy noticed a little kid next to the throne.
“Close your eyes,” she cried out to him, hoping he wouldn’t get blinded.
Buffy felt sick to her stomach when the boy disintegrated along with the rest of the vampires. She knew they were monsters, but why would they turn a little kid?
“Is that normal?” Peter asked, pointing to the skeleton of the guy on the throne.
There was something eerie about the bones sitting there and she gave an involuntary shudder. “I’ve never seen it happen before. Not sure why he didn’t dust like the others.”
“Maybe we should try destroying them at the crematorium, just to be safe,” he suggested. Things that were unusual were bad enough in his old life, but he had to think that they were even worse when dealing with demons.
“Yeah, and then we can tell Giles the Master is gone,” Buffy replied, still in a little bit of shock about the kid. Then she forced herself to cheer up and bumped shoulders with Peter. “Good job on those sun things. Those with help when we’re outnumbered.”
“But they’re kind of pricey to make, so we can’t just use them all the time,” Peter warned.
A/N: This is my last planned chapter. The way I interpreted the Powers’ reasoning, Angel needed to be in Sunnydale until the Master was dealt with permanently. If there are any scenes you’d like to see me write, let me know and I’ll see what Musie thinks of them.
And it happened again tonight, only earlier (because I was writing earlier since I have work tomorrow)! I think I might just have to lock my door when I’m writing until the month ends.
