Avengers Tower
It shouldn’t have been surprising that they’d run into each other at some point, given that they both were on the fringes of the Avengers’ sphere of influence. But since Oz wasn’t expecting Buffy to be away from the Hellmouth - or Tara away from Willow - he’d admit to a little bit of shock. When he found out why both of those things had happened, he wanted to say he couldn’t see it coming, but that wouldn’t have been entirely truthful. His ex’s growing obsession with magic while he was in Sunnydale had concerned him, despite her general lack of success most of the time. If she started getting more powerful without learning control…
He just hoped that if she ever went nova, she wouldn’t take out California with her. That thought made him mourn the girl he had fallen in love with; it sounded like she died a long time ago.
“I know you, Buffy, so what are you really doing here?” Oz asked the Slayer once he shook himself from his maudlin thoughts. Brooding had a time and place, and this wasn’t it.
She just shrugged. “Apparently the Powers are trying to get me to branch out into other stuff since Faith’s successor is watching the Hellmouth now.” When she left Sunnydale in the aftermath of Willow’s tabula rasa spell - in particular Dawn and Spike’s death and the lack of consequences for Willow - the Council decided that they needed a stable Slayer on duty and took the expedient route of killing Faith in prison to get one. Since Buffy hadn’t seen a Council squad coming after her yet, she assumed they were taking a live and let live approach with her, unless she started causing trouble. “Had a dream that these Avengers were going to be targeted by some bad guys hellbent on destroying them and/or the world.”
“I knew you knew who they were!” Tara exclaimed, then explained to Oz the whole deal with lifting Thor’s hammer.
“Figured if we didn’t make a big deal out of it, they wouldn’t get so freaked out. On the plus side, since we’re worthy of good-guy detector, they might just listen to us when we try to help them,” Buffy said off-handedly. “We’d better hurry, though…it’s going down any minute now.”
As they took the elevator to Tony’s lab, Buffy explained the dreams and who the bad guys were. When she was done, Oz explained how Stark had hired him after SHIELD went down with Hydra; the man was duly impressed with the safeguards that Oz had placed into the system which protected the identities of the SHIELD agents and their families. It saved a lot of lives and won Oz a lot of respect from the people who knew…which weren’t many, since he didn’t want a target on his back by claiming credit.
“This sounds like Moloch on steroids,” Oz mentioned, remembering a story which Willow had told him when a demon got loose in the internet.
“Is there anything you can do about that?” Buffy asked hopefully. Point her at a bad guy to beat up, and she’s your girl, but computer stuff? Like this level of computer stuff? Not happening.
“It would help if I had Stark’s AI to help me. The fact JARVIS hasn’t acknowledged me yet has me worried. He likes talking to me about music whenever I come here,” he explained when they gave him a blank look.
Buffy stopped at a locker outside the lab and grabbed a few weapons and they arrive just in time to hear the argument start between Tony Stark and Captain America.
“You don’t know what you’re doing,” the Captain was saying, standing next to the two terrorists Buffy saw in her dreams. She knew the woman could control minds, so she had to assume that if he was acting belligerently towards his teammates, he was compromised. At the very least, she needed to take out the threats, and since she couldn’t trust the Cap not to defend them, she’d have to neutralize him as well. She quickly threw three of the Black Widow’s backup bite weapons and watched the trio go down in a twitching heap.
Tony saw her and quipped, “Aren’t you finished cleaning up yet? I think you need more training. And, thanks,” he added, nodding at the Maximoff twins on the floor. “What are you doing here, Oz?”
Oz gestured to Buffy and said, “Helping my friend out to save the world…for old time’s sake,” he added with a small grin in her direction. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to get in there and speed up JARVIS’ recovery before you do anything else.”
“How did you know JARVIS is down?” Banner asked in surprise.
“He’s not here,” Oz answered simply. “If there’s trouble near Tony, JARVIS is always around to help. If he’s not here, then he’s damaged somehow.”
“JARVIS is the AI, right?” Buffy checked. At their nods, she quickly agreed, “Yes, we need a strong moral AI helping us out here.”
“Who are you?” Tony demanded. He ignored Oz as the smaller man worked his tech magic to fix his favorite AI.
“She is one of Frigga’s favored Shieldmaidens,” Thor announced as he flew into the room. He bowed his head in a sign of respect to the protector of Midgard. When she had lifted Mjölnir before, Heimdall had seen it and told Frigga, who sent word of the Slayer’s destiny. “Are we ready to protect the universe again?” he inquired of the small blonde.
Buffy looked at Oz who shrugged. “I’d prefer to get JARVIS back completely, but he’s at eighty percent now, so if we can’t wait…” he trailed off.
“Do your god of thunder act, Fabio,” she told Thor, then suggested to the others, “We may want to take cover now.” She leaned over to Tara and requested, “Can you do a blessing on this, just to tip the scales in our favor?”
“Not sure what blessing to use,” Tara began.
“One for a strong child who brings honor to his/her parents,” Buffy offered.
“The parents being…?”
“Personally, I’m picturing Stark, Banner and Thor as the daddies,” she answered with a leer.
A/N: Thank god this month is over! Why do I do this to myself every year? But seriously, thanks to the Mods, other writers and reviewers who make this a joy to take part in.
