Dawn's Arrival
By Beriaearwen

Buffy stared down at the small bundle in her arms. Fortunately, it was quiet at the moment. She was still in shock and trying to figure out what had happened.

She had successfully shut down the family home and knew she was ready to go back and face her life as Buffy. The pain of Angel's death had faded enough that it wasn't her every thought, every dream. She had found her strength and power again in that hell dimension.

What she hadn't expect to find was a strange man waiting for her when she returned to her apartment, the apartment she was leaving to Lily. She was expecting even less to be handed a baby girl and told the child was an ancient mystical artifact formed into her daughter which must be protected from the beast.

The man, who barely spoke English, left her with a diaper bag and a rather large duffel bag before disappearing out the door before Buffy could form a coherent response.

The only command she had been left with was “hide her far from the mystical”.

Grabbing the two bags in one hand while holding the baby in the other arm, she moved to the couch. She glanced through the baby bag first and spotted the normal baby items as well as an envelope.

Extracting the envelope, she discovered a birth certificate for the baby - Dawn Marie Summers - Mother Buffy Anne Summers. Father's name was blurred to the point Buffy couldn't make it out. Magic was hiding it for some reason. Also included in the envelope were hospital and health records.

Replacing the papers, she noted the number of bottles, formula and diapers.

“Need to get more of those,” she murmured of the diapers as she counted three onesies, two spit-cloths a few bibs and three pairs of socks.

Pulling the larger bag over, she immediately noted five more onesies of various sizes and two unopened bags of diapers. Moving those aside, she spotted another, smaller bag. Pulling that out, she wondered at the weight of it.

Setting it on the couch next to her, she unzipped it and gasped at the contents. There were four separate compartments in the bag. Two of them were filled with bundles of cash, mostly in twenties, but there were several bundles of fifties and hundreds. In the third compartment was a kings ransom in jewels. The forth compartment held only one large jewel which she instinctively knew was important for her to keep.

Closing the bag quickly, she replaced the money bag and poked through the rest. There were papers and scrolls she assumed would explain more about this Key thing and why she had a daughter. “And maybe who the father is,” she grumbled.

When she finished going through the bag, she sat back slightly, dropping the baby sling on the couch beside her. She had promised Lily the apartment, so she knew she had to leave. Not to mention the instruction to keep the baby away from the mystical. She knew that wouldn't be LA or Sunnydale. Maybe Giles would be able to help.

And that brought about a sigh. She'd finally been able to go back and now she couldn't, not if she was going to keep her daughter safe. But she at least owed calls to her mother and Giles.

“Giles first, baby. Then we'll call Mom - Grandma. She's going to love that.”

Buffy glanced at the board. Her phone calls had been long and difficult, but needed. Giles would need to stay there until the new Slayer, the one to replace Kendra, showed up. Her mom... They would need to play that by ear. During the summer while Buffy had been in L. A., her mom had spent more and more time with the other Scoobies and basically became Den Mom to all of them. They needed her. She assured Buffy that she understood the situation and would explain it to the best of her abilities to the others.

Giles had given her a listing of cities which had no mystical signature and some even seemed to repel it. However, when she did some basic research on the cities, she immediately dismissed Star City, Central City, Metropolis and Gotham.

“Well, baby, Metropolis is the city of the future and the bus for it leaves in twenty minutes. No one would ever expect me of choosing to go there. Hearing no response from the baby, Buffy looked down and saw that Dawn was sleeping. “Let's hope that's a good sign.”

Stepping forward, she bought her ticket, ensured she had her bags, snacks, bottles and diapers and headed toward the bus that would take them to their future.

“Here's hoping you like bus rides.”

Buffy couldn't tell you how long she'd been on the bus, but she couldn't remember ever being so tired and miserable. It's possible that Dawn's fits the last hundred or so miles played into her frustration and that of the driver and other passengers, but she was too tired to think that through.

One thing she did have to give people is that they were, for the most part, kind. Even that peaceful demon who'd nearly passed out when he recognized her was willing to give advice on how to calm her little spawn, er, baby.

Grateful that Dawn had finally fallen asleep, Buffy shifted her bags to one hand and moved some hair out of her face with the other.

She was scanning the depot looking for an information source that could help direct her to a hotel when she bumped into something and went sprawling. Instinctively letting go of her bags in order to protect Dawn.

She looked around for what she'd run into. It felt like she'd run into a brick wall. The only thing she spotted, though was a tall, dark haired man standing nearby and turning to look at her. She barely had time to register the blue eyes and chiseled features when he started speaking.

“Are you OK? I'm so sorry about that. I'm afraid I'm a bit clumsy at times.” His eyes landed on the baby she was holding. “Oh, is the little one OK? He? She?”

“She,” Buffy supplied, gathering her thoughts together and shifting so she could stand.

The stranger reached down and helped her up. She noted that he was very strong and vaguely wondered if he might be part demon. She didn't think so, but her spidey senses were hinting at something being different. Looking around, she spotted her bags and began collecting them. Fortunately, the bag with her money, jewels and important papers was in a backpack she was wearing. It seemed a little strange to have a baby on her front and a backpack on her back, but the weight balanced each other fairly well.

The next bag she spotted was the diaper bag and she started to reach for it.

“Here, let me,” the man said, reaching down and grabbing it. “It's the least I can do. Do you have any other bags?” he asked.

Buffy glanced around for the other bag she'd brought, the one with her clothes and personal items. “Oh, it's over there,” she identified, then watched in horror as stranger reached down and snagged the handle of the bag before racing off. “Hey!” she shouted and started running.

“No, you wait here, I'll get him,” the man insisted before racing off, with Dawn's diaper bag.

Buffy stood and blinked for a moment. She felt a movement and looked down to see Dawn's piercing blue eyes met hers. “I think they might be in it together,” Buffy observed to her daughter. “Think we should go after them.”

Dawn made a sound and blew a spit bubble.

“Good enough for me,” Buffy declared bracing one arm around Dawn before taking off at a job, which to those around her looked like a fast sprint. She was grateful for slayer strength, speed and stamina, not to mention her senses which let her track the two men by hearing.

She reached the entry to the depot and turned left just in time to see the brick wall who bumped into her dash far too fast for a normal human into an alley. Of course she followed.

By the time she reached the alley, the man she'd been talking to was standing in it alone holding both bags.

“Oh!” he said as he turned, surprise evident on his face. “I was going to bring this back to you,” he said offering the bag. “I don't think I ever introduced myself and my Ma would not be pleased with those manners. I'm Clark Kent.”

He paused and looked at her as if expecting her to recognize the name. She didn't. “Nice to meet you,” she offered, allowing her manners to appear. “I'm Buffy and this is Dawn.”

“Are you meeting someone inside?” Clark asked, starting to walk back to the depot.

“No, we're new in town. In fact I don't even have a hotel room yet.”

“Are you just visiting?”

“Actually, I think we're going to be settling in, so I'll need to go apartment hunting soon.”

“Oh. Well, there's a free apartment in my building two floors down from me. It's partially furnished and the rent is pretty reasonable, even for Metropolis.”

Buffy wasn't sure how she felt being so close to this man. Sure, he'd turned out to be OK so far, but that didn't mean he was safe. Looking at him more closely, she had to admit that he seemed to be exactly what he looked like - a good guy. A really built good guy. “I suppose we could take a look at it,” she hedged.

He flashed her a nearly blinding smile. “Great! I'll go grab my bag and we can head over. We'll probably want to take a taxi since it might be a bit far to walk with Dawn.”

“Where are you coming in from?”

“I just spent the weekend visiting my parents in Smallville.” At her blank look he clarified, “Kansas.”

“Oh. I'm sorry, that's the actual name of the town. I thought it might... Never mind.” He laughed at that and she found it a pleasing sound. Dawn did too as she voiced her approval.

“I can see that, but, no, that's the actual name.” He stopped near one of the piles of luggage that had been rolled into the depot and claimed a suitcase and a briefcase. “This is me, let's go see about that apartment.”

Buffy nodded her agreement.

A week later Buffy was bustling around her kitchen a bit. She wasn't a great cook but her mom had been nice enough to walk her through cooking the meal step by step. It had turned out almost as good as if her mother had made herself. There was still quite a bit of work she needed to do getting the apartment set her her and Dawn, but Clark had been right, it was a good apartment at a reasonable price and in a safe building, which he hadn't mentioned. It didn't hurt that he stopped by at least once a day to say hi and play with Dawn. Buffy admired him and really liked him. He was a truly good guy.

After the first time seeing them together, she had a suspicion and had later confirmed it. On the birth certificate she'd received for Dawn, the father's name which had been nothing but a blur before had settled into a familiar one. Per the monk's magic, Dawnie's father was Clark Kent.

Dinner tonight was to thank him for all his help, and, if she could build up the courage, reveal to him a bit of her world and possibly his relationship to Dawn.

Time would tell if it was the right choice.

End.
