Buffy’s dorm room
Tara peaked inside to make sure Buffy was decent before she and Jon came in and plopped on the empty bed. Willow had been gone for a week now and Buffy was still a bit fragile, emotionally-speaking.
Searching for a safe topic that wouldn’t smother her, Jon saw a package on the empty desk. “What’s this?” he asked, getting up to look at it.
Buffy looked confused for a moment, then answered, “I had my blood tested during the Sunday thing and forgot to check out the results when everything worked out okay.”
“Why would you test your blood?” Jon persisted.
“There was this test the Council put me through last year where they drugged me, and I lost my abilities. Then they set a psycho vamp loose - or lost control of him and I had to fight him to pass this ‘honored tradition’,” she summarized, leaving out Giles’ part in it. “They fired Giles because he came with to help me.
“Are you sure they’re good guys?” Jon asked, thinking of the NID.
Buffy nodded, and said, “Yeah, they’re just bastards who are puffed up with their own importance. But they sent me Merrick and Giles, so they aren’t that bad.”
Tara raised her hand to ask a different question, “Aren’t all vampires psychos?”
The Slayer shrugged. “To various degrees. You have the kind that could almost blend in with society if it wasn’t for their diet and sun allergy - and they’re terrifying in their own way - and on the other end of the rainbow you have the monsters like Kralik, who make other vampires afraid because they’re so twisted.”
“When Sunday beat me, I was worried that I was getting dosed again somehow and asked a friend of a friend to check it out. When I kicked her ass the next night, I stopped worrying,” she explained.
“Do you mind?” Jon held up the envelope. He opened it when she indicated no. “Turns out you were right not to be worried. Nothing unusual, and I have a friend who would love to have your cholesterol score.”
“Kinda part of the Slayer package,” Buffy reminded him. “How were classes?”
After they filled her in on their day, Tara inquired about hers.
Sighing, Buffy sat down and told them, “I like my psych class most of the time, but the TA is getting on my nerves. It wasn’t bad at first; I was just another student to him…any conversation was about the class, you know. Then a couple weeks ago it’s like a switch flipped in his brain and he got the idea that we’d be a nice couple. He keeps asking me out and I keep saying no.”
“You aren’t attracted to him?” Tara asked, much to Jon’s dismay.
“He’s good-looking,” Buffy allowed, “gorgeous even…in a neutral kind of way. I don’t know, it just doesn’t feel right.”
“Because it isn’t!” Jon protested. “I mean, because he’s your TA and is in a position of authority over you,” he tried to save himself. Buffy might have bought it, but the smirk on Tara’s face said he was in trouble later.
“Huh, I guess I hadn’t thought about that,” Buffy said thoughtfully. “I mean, if it was someone Walsh’s age and position, I could see the ick-factor, but since he’s closer to our age, it didn’t occur to me. But he does have some say on my grades, so it wouldn’t be right until the class is over…if I changed my mind.”
“Then you should tell him that,” Tara replied, glancing at Jon for his reaction - which was like someone gave him a lemon to suck on.
Buffy shrugged, “It couldn’t hurt, and maybe he’d give me some breathing room for a few months.”
The next day…
He’d never admit to being there on purpose, but Jon just had to catch Buffy after her psych class, maybe invite her to lunch. Tara got him to admit he liked Buffy as more than just a friend, but he certainly wasn’t going to push for anything more than that right after she lost one of her best friends. He could wait until she finished grieving for Xander.
Plus, he had to figure out how to tell her about the clone/age issue without breaking a hundred federal laws.
His eyes narrowed as he saw Buffy leaning against a wall, cornered by who he guessed was the amorous TA. Literally, the guy had his hand on the wall, trapping her on one side while there was a half-wall on the other side. It was a classic intimidation technique and if he was half as good at psychology as he should be, the bozo would know it gave him a heightened sense of power in the interaction.
It might work with a normal girl, but for Buffy, she probably just found it annoying.
Still, it was predatory, and just because it wouldn’t bother his friend, didn’t make it right.
He walked up and greeted Buffy with a hug, surprising her and irritating the guy. “Hey, Buffy, I hope you don’t mind me coming over to ask you to lunch?” He pretended to notice the guy he just physically brushed out of the way. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt. I can come back later, if you want, Buffy,” he offered with his most innocent voice.
Given the raised eyebrow she was sending his way, she wasn’t buying it for a second, but her relief at his intervention overrode that. “No problem, Jon. This is my TA for Walsh’s class, Riley…” she broke off, momentarily forgetting his last name. It was on the syllabus, but he went by Riley in class.
“Finn,” Riley finished with a tight smile. He took Jon’s hand and squeezed it harder than necessary, further bugged when Jon didn’t react.
Deciding to push his luck, Jon said, “Oh yeah, that guy! Did you explain why you didn’t want to go out with him?”?
If looks could kill, he’d need a sarcophagus right then. He wasn’t sure who would get to him first, but he was willing to lay odds on Buffy.
“Yes, but he was just saying that it wouldn’t be a problem,” Buffy gritted through her smiling teeth.
Since he didn’t have any broken limbs yet, Jon went for the touchdown, so to speak. “It would be interesting to see what the dean would say about a TA persisting in asking a student - especially one in his class - on dates, even after being told no. Maybe we should find out?”
Apparently, there were a few people listening into this conversation because some girls started to clap and cheer in agreement.
Riley muttered an apology and slunk off with as much dignity as he could muster under the circumstances.
Before Buffy could ream Jon out for playing the hero, the girls came over and started thanking him for speaking up on her behalf. While Riley hadn’t pulled this move on anyone else - that they knew of - other TAs had, and it was difficult to get anyone to believe a he said/she said.
After that, Buffy couldn’t be angry at Jon for helping her out of an awkward situation and she ended up buying him lunch as a thanks.
A/N: Thought I’d dust off some of my old FaD stories to keep Musie entertained. Reading back, I realized I forgot the Spike storylines of this part of the season. Call it even more AU and he hasn’t appeared in Sunnydale for the Gem of Amara yet.
