The night of the big game…
Buffy raced out of the gym, chasing her vampiric classmate - god, how blind could people be not to notice that?! - and yelled to Merrick and her parents, “He knows who I am!”
Once they got outside, Merrick asked, “Can you tell where she went?”
Joyce checked to make sure nobody was looking and held out her wand on her palm, chanting, “Point me, Buffy.”
They jumped into the Summers’ car and drove off, scanning the sides of the road for any sign of Buffy. Every fifteen seconds or so, Joyce repeated her spell until they reached an amusement park storage area. Joyce looked at the compound and mumbled, “It just had to be the creepy place.”
“All big bads like the clichés,” Hank reminded her.
As if the god of evil heard them, the attractions began to move on their own. The three of them sighed and moved to the center of the compound, somehow knowing that’s where the confrontation - whoever it was with - would take place.
“Be especially careful,” Merrick warned. “This setup reeks of Lothos’ style.”
“Go-go invisibility!” Joyce cheered quietly, casting the spell on herself.
Hank offered to hit Merrick with it, however Merrick shook his head. “I’ll be the distraction. I know I don’t need to tell you, but make sure Buffy makes it out alive if this is Lothos. She’s doing better than I expected, but I don’t think she’s ready for him yet.”
Not surprisingly, when they got to the center, Lothos was there with his sidekick, facing off against Buffy. What was surprising was that Pike was there as well. Despite his misgivings about the boy, Hank was relieved somebody was by his daughter’s sign, trying to snap her out of the hypnotic spell she was apparently under at the moment.
When he tried to snap Buffy out of it, Lothos reached out and threw Pike against a nearby attraction, rendering him semi-unconscious.
“You won’t be able to stop me, Merrick,” the vampire taunted Buffy’s Watcher.
“She’s not ready yet,” Merrick protested, stalling for time.
“Ready or not, she’ll be mine,” Lothos growled possessively. He leaned in to bite her when he suddenly went stiff as a board and fell over.
The sidekick, Amilyn, started to rush forward, only to fall in a similar manner.
Buffy heard her father whisper in her ear, “You are stronger than this Dracula wannabe. You can break his control and stop him! Your mother and I believe in you!” he kept encouraging her until she shook free from the hold Lothos had on her.
She kicked him over so he could see his death coming. Taking the stake offered by her father’s disembodied hand, she leaned over and snarked, “No means no…and I’m saying NO!” With her final word, she drove the stake into his chest, relieved to watch him crumble into ash.
Smiling at Merrick, Buffy went over to Pike, pulled him up and handed him the stake. She pointed at Amilyn and said, “Do a little damage…for Benny.”
Pike nodded and stumbled over with Buffy’s help. “This is for taking my best friend!” he announced, pushing the stake partway into Amilyn’s chest.
Seeing that Pike didn’t quite push it far enough, Buffy swung her leg down and finished the job.
“Good work, Buffy,” Merrick said with a proud grin. “I’m quite pleased with your performance tonight.”
She shrugged and answered, “Only because you guys were here to help. I gotta work on not getting hypnotized again.”
“Perhaps we should work on Occlumency training,” Joyce suggested. “It’s mainly used to protect you from mind reading, but it can also help with any type of mind control.”
“Buffy,” Pike spoke up, “I’m hearing voices.” Then he passed out.
Merrick sighed, “This is getting to be a habit with this boy.”
A/N: I liked that final line. So…Musie decided to save Merrick. That’ll screw the timeline up!
