"Somebody I respect (two somebodies even) said that in some ways they feel as though as an adult they've lost some or all of their faith but have instead gained a rich and immersive fantasy life. Part of me, again, says well that's bad fantasy lives are bad! And another part of me, the part I think is wiser than other parts, says of course that's true, that's because the faith you've been given by your families and your American churches has lost that sense of wonder that is so vital. The church and the liturgy and the faith of Christianity should be in some ways an immersive fantasy life. Not exactly, but something like that. The church is a foreign thing in this world, full of mysteries and rites and rituals and strange beliefs. A lot of churches though have foregone these things, attempting to make the church something that fits with the world we see and hear every day. This is not the way it should be. If the church would focus its attention on trying to be the church, I think a lot of people who miss that sense of wonder and mystery could find it again but of their own making and in the church proper."
