info, movie reviews.. and stuff.

Well... it's well into July, so i suppose i should make another one of these. whatever they are.

Let me start by saying fuck. that about sums up my life. "fuck.", It's nice and simple. It's also to the point, no dancing around or any of those other fun things people do.

I wish i could get even a quarter of the attention my cat gets... But i suppose you have to have people around who care to give you attention to get any. oh well, as long as i have a couple of friends still kicking around i'm as well off as i can be to go.

ok. now to the meat of this, and the only reason why i choose to even bother writing in this thing nobody even reads. As anyone who knows me is aware of. I have a movie addiction, it's rather bad actually. I will at random snatch up any movie I feel should be in my collection. Not even three weeks ago i bought almost 15 movies i believe it was, trying to satisfy my lust for new visual material. It failed of course and i found myself once again in the video store last weekend and this weekend renting movies. Block Buster, and One Stop Video make more money off me than I care to admit. The sad part is i don't even mind that i drop so much pointless cash at such places. What else do i have to spend my play money on?

Nothing.

If that was your guess, you would be more than right. Now i can see that this could possibly get me in trouble saying i have nothing to spend my play money on. but you know what? I really don't have anyone or anything else to spend my play money on. the cats are both healthy and well fed enough to live three weeks on their own fat. as well my gas is being paid, loan, insurance and even after my play money i have cleared it all with roughly 120 left over. not bad considering i only had 160 or something to start with. But let me restart. My fingers got working in a mindless ramble and i lost sight of my ultimate reason for even doing this.

I decided i should give an opinion on the two movies i rented this week. yes i know my opinion holds less than it should.. even with people to whom it should matter, but fuck it... I can do nothing about it.

Lets start with the movie 'A History of Violence'.

I must say ultimatly i was let down with this peace. It was well scripted, shot, and acted. But it was not at all what the original information on it made it sound. When i first heard of this movie(over a year ago.). They made it sound more like a documentary deal, sort of like one of the movies on serial killers. like the ed gein movie or some such. So that's why i was let down.

Now don't get me wrong, taking that away and watching it from the veiw that it is actually a movie and not a documentary sort of deal. i really like it, i think mostly every character had the right actor or actress choosen for the job. The kid who played Viggo Mortensen's son got a little tiring with his whiny little bitch routine. and Maria Bello, as great as she is... i'm not sure was quite suited for teh roll... i prefered her in rolls along the lines of the ones she played in 'Auto Focus' and 'Payback'. I just didn't feel that she was able to preform as well in this movie as those other ones. This is not the first time i have had to enjoy her preformance while also being removed from the story because i just didn't feel her heart was there. I also felt this when she played Amy Rainey in 'Secret Window'. But don't let this be the reason you don't bother watching this movie.

I was also a little upset by Ed Harris in this movie. Actually mostly for the same reasons i was upset with Maria Bello. It just didn't feel like his heart was in the character.. but on average Ed Harris isn't one of my favourite actors, so perhaps i am being a little hard on him.

Now that we're finished with characters, the actual movie itself. it's shot in what appears to be sort of a glossy take on real colour. it doesn't have much in the way of that intence sort of bright vibrant colour that seems to appear in a lot of modern movies. it's a nice way to ground the audience and make them remember they're watching a story based on truths. Yet it is still glossy enough to let you enjoy the movie. The violence is a star in a way, working along side the actors... it doesn't appear as much as one might think with a title like 'A History of Violence.', but when it does rear it's ugly head it is intence. They've taken great care in making the violence seem as close to real as possible. I don't know however weather it was for shock value or for other reasons. But it's there, and it's there in the open basicly screaming. fuck you mpaa. In the end some realism was compromised to keep the movie "R" rated opposed to the "X" rating every movie which walks a unique path fears.

So all in all, the movie works very well. It's nicely cut together and the score suits the movie. The violence is there and in your face but not in a fashion that makes you cringe and think "why?". I liked it, but i'm not sure if there's enough to this movie to make it worth a buy, it just seems to lack taht special something to make me keep coming back, perhaps i will watch it again and make an edit to this later.

The second movie i rented was 'Underworld: Evolution'

I will work on the assumption that everyone has seen the first movie. if only to cut down on the time it takes to go through main characters.

Kate Becinsale, and Bill Nighy come through with the same stunning proformance they do. it's almost as if everything these two choose to play they just turn to solid gold. Even if i'm not impressed with the charcater Bill Nighy plays, i think he salvages it very nicely.

Scott Speedman however i was less impressed with in this movie, he seems to play it a little too cocky. Had his character not been such a bitch in the first movie this would have worked. But it just seems like too much of a contrast between his character in this movie and the first one. a simple dumbing down of those cocky smiles would have helped improve the expierence much much more.

The man who played marcus, the first time through i didn't like him.. upon the second viewing i realised it's just becuase he's ugly and nothing wrong with his acting. so enough said there haha.

I was a little worried with this movie. How do you possibly follow up a suprisingly good movie like the first underworld? usually it doesn't happen. But they were given enough budget and they had enough commone sence to not derail from the first movie too much, the CG is good, and the practicle costumes mesh well with CG effects.

The story played well, and they did a good but slightly confusing job of giving you the whole backstory. The reason for this confusing and condencing possibly too much of a much larger story is becuase they fit everything into thsi movie. so if there is a third movie, we all know the story and they can move on with something completely new.

This is definatly worth a buy. and it doesn't need much in the way of a review.. becuase of the way it's set-up. it can easily be summed up with "if you liked the first movie, pick this one up too."

ok kids. that's it from the gallery for now. cynics exit your normal routes. everyone else burn and die.

peace and love Ryan.
the tom tom plant says everybody rant. sing. dance. and squeal. but only do the latter during sex. like a pig.
