wrath of the coalbear

I ran another playtest of Deep Black yesterday. It was a little slower than the last game, but most of us were a bit on the tired side.

Here’s an antagonist that popped up in that session, but I don’t think will end up in the book proper-the Might Coalbear. I think it may be a little too silly and a little too overtly supernatural to fit the tone I want to present. I do like the idea of Underworlds (which came to mind while I was mentally composing the write up in the shower this morning), which are cribbed from here*.

The Mighty Coalbear
A large black bear-its heart is black as coal, as is every other part of its body. The Mighty Coalbear is a fierce protector often charged with guarding important objects or locations, and will gladly give up its life to do so.

The Coalbear is immune to rhetoric, pleading, debate, logic, and the like. When slain, the Coalbear crumbles into lumps of coal, except its head which remains in tack.

The Coalbear is an impossible creature, and thus can only be found in some sort of underworld-where the normal laws of causality are suspended. Sufficient to say, underworlds are dangerous places to visit-if only for the presence of the Might Coalbear.

It occurred to me later that the Coalbear was more in the vein of old school D&D monsters, except my pun might not be quite as clever.
