When you think of Tokyo, you tend to picture busy streets, crowds, luxury shopping centres, and skyscrapers. Maybe a shrine or two. But Tokyo is enormous, it has a lot to offer ( Read more... )

Gorgeous place! From your commentary on the twitter picture, I thought this was somehow still smack dab in the city of Tokyo and that's what had me wondering about the locale. ;)

Haha, I see! I guess Tokyo will always be more known for its huge cities, but really, it has so much beautiful nature too!

See, when I hear Tokyo, I automatically think of one city full of colorfull neon signs and shiny skyscrapers and temples and Disney.

Tokyo is confusing, I think most people think of it as one big city, similar to capital cities in Europe. But it's not like that at all. Tokyo is a metropolis, built up of 39 municipalities and 23 city wards (self governed cities) within the historical boundaries of what was known as Tokyo city up until 1943. Tokyo is one of Japan's 47 prefectures.

Travelling around Tokyo really feels like travelling between different cities. Each city ward has its own look, atmosphere, and history. It's all part of what makes Tokyo so exciting!

Fun fact! Disney isn't located in Tokyo. 8D Even though it's called Tokyo Disneyland, it's actually located in Chiba prefecture.

That ... clears things up a bit, I guess. I had no idea that each city ward was governing itself! Well, travelling mostly in Eurpoe and to the West, I have only ever seen the "classic" capital cities, really...
Maybe one day you should do a post where you detail which municipality or city ward you like best for what reasons. XD

That's such a good idea! I'd love to do that, thanks! :D I love working on projects like this, haha. Also gives me a great excuse to travel to the cities I haven't been to yet.
