Kill Bill vol 1 + 2

My Tarantino retrospective at Cinemateket continues. Thursday night I went and saw a double feature of both Kill Bill films back to back. It was great fun, though technical mishaps and terrible subtitle translations kept pulling me out of the film, which was a shame.
The sound would cut for a good couple of seconds after every single cue mark. It was extremely annoying, especially for a film like Kill Bill where the soundscape is so important. I tweeted Cinemateket asking what was up with the sound, but never got a reply :(

I might be wrong, but I think Kill Bill was the first Tarantino film I ever watched. The first film came out in 2003, I was 17 and all about Japanese pop culture. The film just pushed all my interest buttons at the time. I do also remember that I was a little disappointed with it, because I thought Uma Thurman was really ugly, and I wished the lead was prettier. HAHAHAHHAHAHA. I am happy to say that this has since changed, and Uma's face no longer stands in the way of me enjoying this film.

O-Ren Ishii is still probably my favourite thing about vol 1. Even though Lucy Liu's Japanese pronunciation is a little muddled, she is able to pull off this super badass character, it truly excited me to see all these amazing female characters on screen when I first saw this film, and it still excites me. The anime sequence about O-Ren's origin is so great! Weren't there talk of a spin-off based on O-Ren? I would have been so into that.

Vol 2 has a different feel than Vol 1, but I have difficulties pinpointing exactly what sets them apart. Pai Mei is by far my favourite thing about Vol 2. The beard, those eyebrows. Overall I think Vol 2 feels a little sillier, it's like Vol 1 established this world, we know the setup and the score, now let's play around with it and have some fun.

Tarantino took inspiration from Lady Snowblood for Kill Bill, but I didn't really understand how much he borrowed from it until I watched it later on. It's a great film, and now I feel like doing a re-watch.

Is he still going to do Vol 3?
