Collectible Gaming

Now that I'm back home, and it's a new year, it's time to really enjoy the Christmas loot I scored this year. One of the favourite things I got for Christmas was a starter set + Collector's box of Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men.

But twiss, I hear you say, this is clearly a collecting fad for children!

I guess. But it's also a super fun tactical game! A collectible dice one at that. There are booster packs with dice. There are cards to describe the character powers, but the dice drive this game. That's the thing that hooked me. It's such a tactile experience, and the dice look great! All the character dice have different designs and different colours to match the characters they represent, the characters are all Marvel characters from within the Uncanny X-Men universe, but there's also a Dice Masters series called Avengers vs. X-Men, if that's more your thing. All the Dice Masters series can be combined and played together. They will release a D&D themed Dice Masters series later this year (!!!!)! EVERY BOOSTER CONTAINS TWO DICE AND TWO CARDS. SOME OF THEM ARE SUPER RARE~ AAAAAH!

Ehem.

Really, though, you only need the starter set to play. There is no need to collect extra dice unless you want to. The starter set contains enough characters for two players to have their own team and battle each other. It works well as a stand alone game, the gameplay is pretty fast, and it's a lot of fun once you get the rules down. Like all collectible games, it's a bit fiddly in the beginning. But it's worth learning. Once you get the basics down, you can tweak your teams and play around with strengths and weaknesses. The game has a surprising level of depth to it! It's definitely more than just rolling dice (I admit I was shocked you only roll the dice once per turn!! XD). Think of it more like a miniature battle game where you roll the miniatures before each turn to see what stats the miniature will have for that battle. That's basically it.

This game looks super old school. It really reminds me of all those collectible games of my childhood. The collector's box looks more like a long forgotten treasure of the 80's than a brand new thing that was just released for the very first time in late 2014.

I got a bunch of booster packs to go with the starter set and the collector's box - and you know what, as long as I can get boosters here, I'll keep picking them up. They are cheap and fun!

My favourite dice so far are the ones representing Magneto. They're this lovely frosted white with purple details. They look fantastic! Magneto is included in the starter set, I was lucky enough to get an extra die in one of the boosters I got.

I hope I'll be playing a lot of this in 2015. If my local comic book store hosts organized play, I'll sign up!
