Day 3

Aug 06, 2014 00:03

We had a day filled with train travel yesterday, so we decided to relax for a bit, walk around the area around the apartment.

We walked through Ueno park where we took pictures and people watched. I don't think I'll ever get tired of people watching in Japan. I feel there are still so many things to learn, Tokyo dwellers have all these little tricks to make life more convenient, and I want to soak it all up. Yesterday I saw a woman bring her own little.. thingamajig to a cafe, I thought it was a piece of jewlery, but nope, it was a hook for her handbag! Genius. It rested on the edge of the table, and she could hang her handbag from it. No more worrying about having to put your bag on the floor or forgetting it in the seat beside you.
And don't get me started on all the things people do to keep cool and dry in the summer heat. It's truly a sight to behold where the very, very basic technique is to layer your clothes, and carry a bottle of something cold to drink along with a hand towel at all times. It's quite different from the way people deal with heat in Norway (people just undress, and then lay about in the sun ....).

After Ueno we walked to Yanaka Ginza, which is a little shopping street with treats to try, souvenirs to buy, and cute little cafes. We dropped by a local cafe, where I had the best iced mocha ever. I want to go back there!

We discussed plans for tomorrow, and we are headed for the beach tomorrow. I figured I wanted to go look at some beach wear, meant to pick up maybe some sandals to wear, and then oops, ooops. Someone take my wallet away from me, because this keeps happening :X

pretty much everything needed for the beach, including a beach bag and a UV reducing jacket ....

Today's dinner was a fancy three course meal at niku no mansei, which seems to be a bit of an institution at Akihabara. It's apparently been there since 1949. We meant to eat here last year, but we arrived after the cut off for last order at the fancy steak house, so we had to settle for the family restaurant floor XD;;;; The steak was absolutely fantastic, and the red wine! Japanese red wine tends to be a lot sweeter than the wine (typically Australian or Italian) I have back home. They also serve it chilled, which I'm not used to, but it's very, very delicious. I wonder if there are any wine tasting events that I could attend, I'd love to learn more about Japanese (red) wine.

Pictures!
I walk around with film cameras, and I am apparently too lazy to take out my phone every time something interesting pops up, so I am sharing Christian's pictures :S
Pictures are over here.

This gallery features a bunch of his pictures, so not all of these pictures are from today (or even from this holiday) 8D You click the link "Fortsett" to go back further to see even more pictures (lucky!)

And here are my sad phone pictures from today xD
