It Isn't a Penguin

We have a flaw, we striding figures of our age. Our warmth to others wanes beneath the pack-ice of our legends.

May is filled with random public holidays, and I have been hanging out at my favourite café a lot lately. This may not be related to the fact that May gives us more time off than usual, but perhaps.

Showing up at the café today, I was greeted by Christian who had picked me up a surprise from the comic book store. I mentioned I wouldn't have anything to work on, read, or play at the café while he did his work, so he found something for me to do. BOYS ♥ ... anyway

He picked me up Nemo: Heart of Ice by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. There is no plot description, summary or blurb of any kind on the cover, and apart from the obvious Jules Verne reference, you don't really know what you're in for until you start reading. The book is 56 pages long (or so the internet tells me, the pages aren't actually numbered in the book), so it's easily consumed during a café visit. Set to 1925, it's somewhat of a steampunk-y adventure story, heavy on the adventure. The characters, plot, and setting made me think of H.P. Lovecraft, The Thing, and of course, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. I must admit, I wasn't 100% sold on the art, but there are some brilliant imagery, and the cover illustrations and little extras "make up for it". I am completely in love with this one, for instance;

The adventure was engaging, it read like a report from a role playing game, it definitely had that party exploration feel to it. In short, I really enjoyed it a whole lot. I just wish there was more of it.

Lucky for me, I have discovered that this is actually a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen adventure - and I am all sorts of excited about having been introduced to this series in such a cryptic way. I am sure this little adventure I've just been on is filled with in-jokes and other references that will make a lot more sense once you know the world and its characters better. I am really looking forward to it. My pile of unread comics is getting ridiculously tall, though. It's catching up to my pile of unread books, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Is it?

Thankfully May has all of these public holidays, so there will be plenty of time for me to sit myself down somewhere quiet and go on amazing adventures. I can't wait.
