With everyone talking about the release of iOS5 I felt left out and decided it was about time I updated the software on my phone as well. I have a Sony Ericsson XPERIA 10, I've had it for about 10 months, there's been countless software updates, but I haven't been able to update my phone until now. Why? Because for some ungodly reason, Sony Ericsson's PC Companion, the tool you need to update your phone, is only available for Windows users. Don't get me wrong, I love my phone, and I'm very happy with it... but I might have chosen differently if I'd known that I wouldn't be able to update my phone by myself.
The first software update notification ticked in a couple of weeks after I'd bought my phone. I took it to the store where I bought it, and asked if it would be possible for me to update my phone there, seeing as I didn't have a Windows computer available. They told me they'd have to send it in for service to do that. It would take 2 - 4 weeks. Ooookay then. And so I ignored every software update after that.
Of course, I actually use Windows computers every single day now. We're not supposed to do ~personal stuff~ on them, but I let curiosity get the better of me, I had to get this latest software update so that I could feel the excitement of having new shiny features as well. In the rush of trying to do things ~secretly~ I didn't read all the instructions, and was left with an updated phone with a wiped memory. All my stuff was gone. I no longer had any apps, accounts or contacts. For some bizarre reason most of my pictures are still intact, as are a couple of Morning Musume songs. I have no idea why. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to get my phone to connect to the internet again. All kinds of fun was had.
Despite the... inconvenient setback, I am very pleased with this update. The battery life seems to have improved 100%, I'm not even joking, the battery issue was the #1 reason I wanted to update, and it seems to have been worth it. Menus have a new look, there are new fancy animations and transition screens... I got rid of a bunch of unwanted apps, as well as wiping my old default google account, which was awesome, because there was no way to delete the default google account, and I wanted to make my G+ account my default one 8Db .... so yeah. The good outweighs the bad. I just need to collect people's phone numbers. Again. I feel like I just did this. Uuuugh.
