Kate stared at the mobile phone in her trembling hand. She’d dialled the number, but she couldn’t bring herself to press the ‘call’ button.
“If there’s anything you want to talk about,” he’d said, handing her a card, “you can call me. OK?” His voice had sounded rough, but there was kindness in his eyes.
At the time, she’d smiled and thanked him while at the same time hoping she would never have to call him. She certainly wasn’t planning on going to Miami again.
But seeing the email to Ana had changed things. Kate had been shocked and horrified when she found it. She’d always known there was something wrong with Christian Grey, but this…
She didn’t know what to do. It wasn’t in his jurisdiction and the local cops could probably handle it, but if anyone could give her advice she felt sure he could. Of course she’d made copies of the email - both hard and electronic; she’d just let Grey think there was only one so he wouldn’t hurt her or Ana.
Swallowing, she pressed the button; the call went straight to voicemail.
“Lieutenant Caine? It’s Katherine Kavanaugh - you probably don’t remember me, but I think a friend of mine needs help. I came across an email she got from her boyfriend and it’s really freaked me out. I think she’s in serious danger. I know we’re not in your jurisdiction, but please could you call me back?”
She hung up and dialled another number. This number was her plan B; then again, there was no guarantee that this would work either. But she had to try for Ana’s sake.
This time, there was an answer.
“Hello? Aaron Hotchner speaking.”
