Blood.

The smell made him stop suddenly. It was fresh, it was human, it smelled spicy… it was the blood of a wolf. Enticing was another word that could describe it. A wolf’s skin smelled repulsive but their blood… that smelled delicious.

Turning, Jasper ran toward the smell. It wasn’t long before he found the source. Blood tainted the white snow that had been piled against a large red oak by the wind. Most of the snow had been melted by the intense body heat of the wolf who was nowhere in sight.

Jasper took a cautious step forward, unsure of what he would find. He knew the scent of the absent wolf. Seth. The fact that so much blood had come from the young wolf disturbed him, though it concerned him more that Seth was gone after losing so much blood. He knew wolves healed quickly but this was blood from a serious wound. Seth could have been more injured than he realized.

A small cry drew Jasper’s attention to the base of the tree. He had been so distracted by the blood he hadn’t noticed the small opening at the base of the tree. Snow had been deliberately piled up against the opening to make it less noticeable. Careful to not kneel in the bloody snow, Jasper brushed the snow away from the opening.

His eyes, bright gold from his hunt earlier, widened when he saw.

A baby.

The cold air now allowed to enter the hole caused the baby to shiver and cry. Jasper knew immediately that this babe was a Quileute. The dark skin, hair, eyes and most of all the smell gave it away. This babe was a wolf child.

Jasper pulled his sweater off before reaching inside the tree to bring the baby out. Immediately the baby’s cries filled the otherwise silent woods. Quickly, Jasper wrapped the baby in his sweater and stood. He needed to get this babe, a girl he noted, back to the house. She probably needed food and medical attention.

The moment Jasper returned with the baby the house became a flurry of activity. Rosalie claimed the role of mother, along with Esme. Carlisle checked her over while Alice tried and failed to see her future. Emmett and Edward hovered with curious worry.

Jasper cleared his throat to gain his brother’s attention. “We need to find Seth,” he stated.

“Why?” Emmett questioned.

“We need to find out why he left his baby in the snow to die.”
