Room 327, Sunday Afternoon

Nov 20, 2011 15:10

It was ridiculously early to go home for Thanksgiving, in Juliet's opinion, but Portalocity told her it could only guarantee first-class tickets through Monday evening. Besides, there was always important shopping to do in New York. She figured Professor Skywalker would forgive one teeny-tiny missed ethics class if she explained her reasoning, ( Read more... )

"What was that about portals being lame?" Jeremy enquired with a displeased look as he appeared in the doorway.

The J,GoB bag in his hand betrayed the fact that he'd been on his way upstairs when he'd gotten the message. Otherwise he would've just texted him back.

"They're saying we have to go today or tomorrow if we want first class," Juliet whined. "I guess we could stay a little longer if we send for a car..."

Let's not mention the commercial flights and trains that ran between Maryland and New York or, god forbid, the bus. Juliet had standards.

Jeremy made a face. "But I don't wanna send for a car." Wouldn't that take like forever and a half? Ugh, pass. "Fine, I guess we can leave early."

"I know, they always smell funny down here," Juliet agreed, matching his expression. "I'm sorry. This doesn't wreck anything you had planned, does it?"

"Nah." Well, he hadn't really gotten around to making any plans, so he shook his head a bit. He was still a little bummed out about it, though. "Did you try telling them it's a Darling emergency that we'd need to get first class later than tomorrow?"

Because that made total sense. Right.

"That was the first thing I tried," Juliet said. "They said first class to New York after tomorrow is for travelers performing essential multiverse functions only."

If the last bit sounded somewhat canned, it was because the poor Portalocity rep had needed to go over it with Juliet many times before it sunk in. Many, many times.

"They also wouldn't take a donation to the Portalocity Foundation" -- read, a bribe. "I think we're stuck."

"Ugggh," Jeremy replied, eloquently. "Early portal it is, then." He wrinkled his nose. "So you wanna skip town today? Or wait 'til tomorrow? Either is too freaking early for Thanksgiving."

"Tomorrow?" Juliet hazarded, in a way that made it clear her preference wasn't terribly strong. "Troy at the theater said they might have the cast list up by then. It'd be nice to be able to tell Dad if I get a good part."

Jeremy nodded. "I'm cool with that. Ooh, especially 'cause I have a class." Which he even remembered! It was kind of amazing, from him. "It's badassery, I don't wanna miss it."

And then... "Wait, did you audition after what you did when we were kids?"

Someone had been a little preoccupied with other things.

Juliet nodded. "On Wednesday. I recited some song lyrics and they had me read this Mrs. Claus monologue too." Smiling, she added, "It may even have been better than Rudolph."

If only because she hadn't forgotten what she was saying and started to twirl mid-performance.

Jeremy smiled at her. "I'm sure it was maximum." No he wasn't, but he was willing to get seriously annoyed at anyone who told her otherwise. "There's a whole winter theme, right?"

"Yeah, it's holiday traditions from different places," Juliet said. "... I wonder if any of the outer space people have Christmas."

She smiled at him. pressing the stray thought aside. "And it was completely maximum." She believed it, that was what mattered.

It totally was. "Cool, so we'll stay and check out the list, which you will definitely be on." Though he was prepared to distract her with copious amounts of shopping if she wasn't. "How much are you packing?"

He wouldn't want to be outdone.

Juliet gestured to her suitcase, which could comfortably serve as a bed for a three-year-old. "Just this and an overnight bag or two."

It was only a few days, after all.
