Ratchet reclined on the twins' berth reading a healing scroll Patch had let him borrow. He was rarely allowed to use his craft, which left him little to do but sit and read or watch the gardens most of the cycle. Crystaleve slept curled up at his side purring gently in her sleep, both enjoying the silent respite with both lords out of the castle. Rouges, disgraced soldiers banished from their own lands, had been seen near the border pulling the lordly twins to deal with them. Devoid of home or service the rogues attacked villages, raped who they wanted, killed everyone they found and took their spoils.
Ratchet started, his concentration shattered with a sudden ruckus sounding outside the chamber door. Getting up Ratchet walked over to the door and peered out spotting his appointed guards embroiled in a fight that was pulling all the servants from their duties as they cajoled the fighters or tried to separate them. Ratchet took in the fight for just an instant, catching a glimpse of Anglewave lost in the clamor, then glanced down the opposite side of the corridor, seeing no one. This was his chance!
With the guards and servants distracted Ratchet slipped from the room and closed the door silently behind him then moved swiftly through the twisting corridors following the route he had memorized on his precious few trips to the gardens making as little sound as possible. Successfully making it to the lower level of the palace Ratchet kept a sharp optic out for any servants. They'd rat him out in a spark beat to please their Lords, and Ratchet didn't dare think of his punishment. The Lords had promised worse pain and lifelong confinement within their quarters devoid of even the slight joy the gardens brought if he ever dared to attempt an escape.
Being mindful of the ever present guards Ratchet slipped from hallway to hallway, spark lightening when Crystaleve suddenly appeared beside him, until he finally reached the door. Now came the hard part, getting through the gardens without being seen from the palace. Crystaleve followed silently behind him the loyal neocat staying right at his heels. Staying near the west side furthest from the concubines' wing, Ratchet dove from cover to cover praying that his absence wouldn’t be noticed until he was free again. Thankfully he had a resourceful friend on his side to look out for danger. Crystaleve softly meowed or hissed whenever somebot was approached warning Ratchet to duck down. Ratchet only relaxed once they reached the stand of crystal trees that marked the forest's edge. They stood tall and shielded him from view, but just as he entered the trees the bells sounded distantly at the palace announcing the Lords had returned. Ratchet felt his spark run cold, if the Twins were home then it would only be a matter of time before he was discovered missing.
Launching into the trees Ratchet ran has hard as his legs could carry him. Crystaleve called as she struggled to keep up causing him to pick her up in his arms. He didn’t stop until his legs threatened to crumble beneath him. A large clearing came into view as Ratchet stopped to rest, his legs buckling from too much abuse from his masters and precious little to do but sit. He landed with a weary huff near the base of a tree letting Crystaleve down when his processors had stopped spinning.
He panted heavily looking around the clearing he had found. It was shaded mostly with only a few rays of light shining through the tree branches. The snapping of a twig startled him fearing the Twins had found him but what he saw there was what he never expected. There standing in the rays of light was a CrystalStag. The regal creature stood still as Ratchet gawked at it. The stag was twice the size of a mechahorse with a wide rack of antlers that curved in graceful arches. It's blue fur glowed like the brightest crystal as its bright blue eyes watching him with a wise, gentle gaze. It stood on thin spike tipped legs and moved with a grace superior to a neocat. Ratchet stayed perfectly still as the deer stepped towards him. Not wanting to scare away the magnificent creature that was spoken of in legends. Crystaldeer were rare beasts that were viewed as sacred beings. No hunter dared to kill them; they held such a presence that was unparallel to any other.
The stag came closer until Ratchet could feel its breath on his faceplate. He looked into its eyes and found intelligence there equal to his own. He watched as the stag lowered its head and placed its muzzle on his sparkchamber nuzzling the clothing there with a strange affection. Ratchet’s veins ran cold as the stag did this. It was said that stags could tell when a mech was carrying if it was nuzzling his chest then that meant he was with spark! Panic took over as the stag raised its head. If the Twins learned of this he would never see the light of day again. They’d never let him outside the chamber doors for fear of him fleeing with the newspark. Yet, Ratchet couldn’t help but feel happy at the same time. He was going to be a carrier; he was going to have a sparkling. No matter what the Twins did to him the sparkling was his, he would protect his sparkling and regain his freedom.
Getting up, Ratchet moved to leave the clearing heading deeper into the forest. The stag following him as a silent protector keeping up with Ratchets fast pace. Crystaleve rested on Ratchet's shoulders somehow climbing on him when he was distraced with the CrystalStag, she purred into his audio. But, just as they made it a few feet away Ratchet heard the distant cry of search hounds. The twins found out! The hounds would find his sent in to no time, they had to hurry. Ratchet bolted, running faster than ever before the knowledge he was carrying giving him renewed energy. If they could make it to a river they could lose the hounds.
As fate would have it his plans were cut short. Out of nowhere two large mechahorses charged onto the path behind them. Upon their backs were the very mechs Ratchet was trying to escape.
