Oh! And I just thought of another point, Mary. I'm formulating this theory as I go with guesstimated percentages, so I apologize if I ramble.
Lately, I've started to care less and less about anime cons and more about Dragon*con (and maybe SDCC?? We'll see about that!). And obviously, the same goes for you. I'd say that maybe, at max, 25% of Dragon*con cosplayers are cosplayers who also attend anime cons, and of that percentage, maybe half of them actually visit /cgl and/or care about knowing who's who in the community. So that leaves approx. 85% of Dragon*con cosplayers who don't know who I am, and probably don't care, and then there are all the people not cosplaying, who know even LESS about things like what cosplayers 4chan cares about and who they don't. So this is one of my main reasons as to why I don't really care about cosplay popularity anymore. It's completely irrelevant when it comes to my favorite con of all time, and I would rather have my costumes appreciated by total strangers who AREN'T going to post me on 4chan or argue about whether I'm a bitch or not from 5 seconds of interaction. @_@
...So was that as nonsensical as I think it probably is?
I could see that. However, if the only photographers going who it's possible to get a shoot from at D*Con(or the only ones you know you'll be able to track down pictures from later) are regular cosplay photographers then one still falls into the conundrum about that I mentioned above.
I also think your average cosplayer can sometimes get pouty about D*Con too. I know somewhere you must have heard someone baww about not getting as much attention for their Bleach costume or whatever at D*Con because anime isn't the main thing going on there.
And sometimes D*Con can just have it's own drama outside of this issue but that's not totally relevant right now.
