My church is doing a similar workshop, based on a book called The Treasure Principle. My pastor gave a really good sermon on tithing (which I too was always suspicious of) a few weeks ago, and explained it similarly: God doesn't need your money, it's to keep everything flowing--blessings pouring in and then back out. He used two powerful images: that of the Dead Sea, into which the river flows. Nothing leaves, it is never refreshed or renewed, and so it is stagnant. And then the image of holding on. When you are so focused on holding onto your stuff, your fist must be closed. And when it is closed and cannot let go, it also cannot accept anything else. I see it all now as so much more spiritual and philosophical than anything else ... it teaches you to just keep passing life's blessings on and not to get attached to accumulating material wealth here in this world. And if your heart feels resistant to that at first, I see that as a sign that something more is going on inside of you, worth paying attention to. I could go on, but I won't.

I also have been wanting to let you know that I'd love to come with you one week and check out your church. It sounds cool, and I'd be willing to drive down one Sunday, maybe we can grab lunch after or something.
