my first reaction was someone that was so convinced of a violent construction of the world couldnt just change his mind about it. like, im sure there are some social constructions that i just wouldnt be able to consider changing.

but, then i thought about gay people in the 80's and before. during the time when being gay was clinically described as a mental illness. i mean, back then, you were either straight or you were mentally ill.

from the description of this violent world, i feel like there's a lot of similarities between the non-violent in this example and the non-heteronormative person within a heteronormative culture. the kid can either pretend to be something he isnt; or risk complete alienation. although, now that i reread the end, that's already been predicted.

maybe you pull the tried and true get-out-of-a-war-you-dont-want-to-fight-in-technique and bust your leg with a brick. you dont have to go because you'd be worthless in a fight and you dont have to explain your unacceptable beliefs. everyone wins. except your leg.
