birthday

Another year has gone by. This time I'm in Washington DC. For my birthday, I worked 7 am to 7 pm! I didn't realize my birthday was so close until I got a few texts reminding me. So if you are one of those few texters, I can't thank you enough for remembering me during this day I had.

I didn't go out to eat with my coworkers b/c I had an OkCupid date. Well, I got stood up. OkCupid dates often go that way for me, and this isn't the first time I've been stood up on my birthday.

I found out my dad had heart surgery today. He is recovering nicely, but I found out late about it. He does have to go back for more.

I also got kicked out of my hotel room. Someone else with my name checked into my hotel today, with the same checkout date as me, and they thought I had double-booked. The hotel is full for the week and weekend. I have to find another hotel now. I have my room again for tonight, at least.

Someone suggested I go to a bar. I took a walk to the Iwo Jima memorial instead. Then I thought about this homeless girl I had talked to a few days prior, to see if she was hungry. She wasn't there anymore, but there was this English language institute where people were taking night classes. And I thought about all these people (iwo jima, all the homeless people around, and all the immigrants), all these people who work much harder than me, are much tougher than me, and have so fewer opportunities. And all my concerns were gone. I just need to exercise and eat a pop tart.

Some days are bad, very bad. But most days are good. And that's really all that matters.

Ciao,
Matt
