Why do worms crawl around on the surface when it rains?

I wonder what it would be like to be a dying tree.

I think they crawl up because all the water from the rain goes in their tunnels and they'd otherwise drown. I always make sure to not step on them if I can help it.

the worms may also have a positive taxis towards moisture and thus end up closer to the wet surface.
