Nate had an interesting day by far. He was still trying to make sense of it all, really. What eleven year old wants to hear that they're really supposed to be an adult from some lady that says she knows him as a grownup? Even if the lady was really nice and made him hot chocolate. It was weird.

But he was happy to not be home. He was having a blast, and he wasn't going to let the things Sophie said stop him. Besides, he sounded like a really boring grownup, and he would thank himself for this later.

He was wandering by the kitchen when he spotted Martha and he grinned. He saw an opportunity for more fun. He slipped into the kitchen and let the door shut behind him, then crossed his arms.

"That'll cost ya," he said.

The door shutting behind him made a rather loud noise in the near silence of the kitchen, and she gasped and giggled with more than a little comedic effect.

However, it wasn't adult; it was just a boy who was a bit older than she was, and was probably rather taller than she was. Her nose wiggled a bit when he mentioned that it would cost her.

"Cost me what?" She inclined her head and she watched him. "Do ya want a cookie too?"

He smirked and shook his head. "Two bucks." Money meant everything, he knew that. He didn't pause to think if money existed in Peaksville, because how could it not? Everyone wanted money and only the smart guys got it. Smart guys like his dad, and he wanted to be like his dad. More or less.

Two fingers popped up. "Two bucks and I don't yell for help."

Martha looked a bit confused, and she wiggled her nose up in response for it. She didn't know anything about a buck. After all, British people had the pound or the bit or something else, but never 'the buck.'

"What's a buck?" She asked the question quickly and stared at him before she took a bite of the cookie in her hand. It didn't make any sense, really. "Like a deer? Don't got two of them."

He rolled his eyes. He realized she had an accent, and knew that people in England had different names for things. He held his fingers up and rubbed them together in the international sign for money. "A buck. A dollar. Money."

That didn't look like any sign for money that Martha had seen outside of a movie, but she got it now. "I don't have any money. I woke up here in my jim-jams. Don't keep money in them. They don't got pockets!"

Nate smirked. He could probably have kept giving her a hard time, or he could have teased her for her accent and words, but really he was a little fascinated. He never was good at being the mean guy for long. He came in the kitchen more and hoisted himself up on the counter to sit.

"Jim-jams? I like that. What other names for things do you have?"

"Well, it's hard because you Americans say all the wrong things, yeah?" Martha grinned and her tone said that she was teasing--there was no fire in the words at all. However, she'd also already spoken to a few Americans so she knew how some of the word differences worked. Picking up a cookie, Martha gestured to it quickly. "We call these biscuits, and you call crisps chips and chips fries which is completely wrong."

She giggled, and it was a silly sort of one before Martha took a bite of the cookie in her hand.

Nate laughed at that and reached for a cookie himself. "To me biscuits are a kind of bread that they make in the south. But I know chips, cuz we eat fish'n'chips and they're just big fat french fries."

"Yeah, that's what someone else said. I think I'd like to try one of them sort of biscuits. They sounded good." Another quick grin and a nibble of the edge of her cookie. It was a sometimes food rather than an all the times food. "Do they do it properly in America? With vinegar and the like?"

"They're okay. I like bagels better." He finished off his cookie pretty quick and grabbed another. He nodded at her question. "My dad does, but I like it with ketchup."

"We have bagels in England, but no one I know likes em. I like crumpets, though." Martha grinned, and her ears wiggled a bit. "My daddy says ketchup with fish and chips is a sin, but Tish and I like it." She laughed and then took another nibble of her cookie.

Nate snorted with laughter. "Ketchup is not a sin! He must say that because he doesn't like it." He nibbles at his own cookie, then hops down to find some milk and two glasses.

"Who's Tish?"
