Jim, not surprisingly to anyone who knew him, had a very similar idea. But he wasn't very sneaky about it--he wanted a cookie, he deserved a cookie, and anyway there was no one around to stop him from having one.

In fact, when Martha entered the kitchen, he already had one in his mouth and another in his hand. Which he promptly held out to the new girl.

"Want one?"

Martha was surprised to see another person, and she blinked to him quickly, but she practically bounced over to the area where he was offering her the cookie from.

"Thanks!" She slipped it quickly into her mouth and then looked to him again. When she spoke it was around a rather full mouth of cookie. "'m Marfa." Her words were a bit garbled. "Wat's your name?"

"Jim!" Jim chirped. He had mostly swallowed his mouthful of cookie. "You have a funny accent."

Martha's nose wiggled up when he said that she had a funny accent. "Nah uh. You've got a funny accent. 've got a proper English one. 'm from London. Where are ya from?"

"Iowa," Jim said. "And that's neat--Iowa's boring. I like your accent."

He took another bite of cookie.

"I like you."

Jim was, if anything, even more straightforward as a child.

"Iowa?" Her tone made it a question, but he had an accent that she was at least a little bit familiar with. He was American. There were loads of Americans here.

When he said that he liked her, she colored a bit all the way to her ears.

"Oh. Thank ya. But ya don't know me."

"Do I have to?" Jim asked innocently. He liked pretty much everyone. "And yeah, Iowa. It's... sort of like here, actually. Only with more adults."

Martha shrugged a bit. She tended to like pretty much everyone, even if she didn't go around and announce it. When he said that Iowa was like here only with more adults, Martha looked a bit shock. "They really do have places like this?"

Jim frowned, his brow furrowing.

"Like what?" he asked for clarification. "I mean, it's old-timey here, but Iowa is flat. And boring."

"Yeah, old-timey. I guess." The words were weird. "It's like being in a movie or something. It's weird." The word was announced quickly, and dragged out, but her face was a mask of delight. Martha was a bit fond of weird things.

"I know," Jim said, equally delighted. "I already went sledding, it was great. Do you sled?"

This was asked with the importance usually granted to professions and marital status.

"I went sledding with a boy called Severus. It was brilliant!" She grinned at it, because it had been rather brilliant, but the brilliance had come with not only the sledding, but also with the magic that he'd used.

"Oh, I met him too," Jim enthused. "Severus is a cool name. But I went with a boy named Jimmy and a girl named Ziva."

He looked around.

"So... how d'you suppose we got here?"

"He's nice. I like him." Martha grinned back at Jim, and then she looked around. "Ziva's a cool name too."

When he looked around and asked how'd they'd gotten there, Martha leaned in quickly.

"Magic." She was certain it was magic. It had to be.

"Severus frowns a lot," Jim announced. But his eyes widened at her next announcement.

"There's no such thing," he contended. "It's just in stories."

"So, loads of people frown a lot. My mommy does." She nodded a bit when she said it. "Frowning don't mean nothing."

Martha was torn when he said that there was no such thing. "Yeah, maybe but how else do you explain it?"
