If living in a house with deaf parents lead to one thing (other than being able to listen to your music as loud as you wanted) it was a keen awareness of ambient noise. Silence could in fact be very loud, alive with rumblings and creaks and groans. So Abby picked up on the oh-so-soft sound of footsteps, and it made her instantly curious. Everything made her instantly curious.
She was glad she had taken off her boots when she had come inside to get warm, it made it easier and quieter to do some tip-toeing of her own. She poked her head around the doorway and saw another little girl sneaking into the kitchen.
"Why are you sneaking?" she asked, in the too loud whisper perfected by children everywhere. "There's no one else in here."
Martha yelped softly when someone broke the silence around her. She hadn't expected it, and she whirled quickly on her toes towards the other girl. The plaid skirt she'd worn spun pleasantly around her, and Martha was more than a little surprised (and distracted) by the furl of fabric.
It's entirely possible that child Martha had a little bit of ADD. However, when she saw that there was another girl, Martha grinned quickly. Her voice was spoken in that same too loud whisper. "Because there might be someone hiding, ya know? I always think my mum isn't there and then she turns up just in time to catch ya."
Martha beckoned the girl closer, and then she pulled a chair out from the table and brought it toward the counter where the jammy dodgers were. She swore that they were there. "'m Martha. What's your name?" A rather large grin and she looked rather pleased to see the girl.
"Oh." Abby's eyes went wide at mention of possible hiders. She hadn't thought of that and she looked around the empty area as if expecting someone to jump out at them at any moment. Sneaking suddenly seemed like a good idea. Plus, it was fun to sneak so she nodded, and stage whispered. "Okay. good idea."
She moved forward at the other girl's beckoning, her socks making soft, whispery noises against the floor that sounded loud to her, but no adults suddenly appeared to ruin the fun so she didn't worry too much about it.
Abby hadn't paid much attention to the kitchen up until now, her morning and afternoon spent almost exclusively outside. They didn't get snow at home and she wanted to enjoy it as much as she could before she had to go back there.
She stood a little ways back from the counter, watching curiously as the girl pulled a chair up to it. "I'm Abby," she replied, grinning back. "Whatcha lookin' for?"
"Yeah. You'd be surprised how good my mum is at it." Still stage whispering, Martha made a quick glance around, seeing if she could see anyone hiding in the shadows. She wasn't scared of things in the shadows, not really, she just preferred not to be surprised.
Martha had an eventful day; so far she'd discovered that magic was real and that Severus Snape was the best boy on the planet because he'd told her about it. However, the secret was important and she kept it locked up tight within her chest.
But when she was asked what she was looking for, a rather large hundred watt grin appeared. "'m looking for a jammy dodger. They're my favorite sort of biscuits."
Abby looked confused. "A what?" She had never heard of a jammy dodger, and the only kind of biscuits she knew were the kind her mama and memaw and aunties made. But she loved those, 'sepcially with butter, so she figured that she would probably like the jammy dodger things too.
She walked to the counter and, tall for a nine and a half year old, didn't need a chair to see onto it's surface. She didn't see any biscuits though. Just some cookies with some kind of filling smooshed between them. "I only see cookies."
She grabbed one and held it out to her new friend. "See?"
"A jammy dodger." Martha spoke the words again quickly, and she tried to remember that according to Sesame Street not everyone spoke the way that she did. It was a bit hard, though, considering that the only other person that she'd met was Severus Snape who was from England like her.
Martha was envious of tall people; she was always so very short. Even her baby brother was taller than she was by an entire head and shoulder! However, she grinned when the cookie was shown to her.
"That is it! Oh, right! You're American, yeah? You call them cookies and not biscuits." Martha grinned a bit.
Abby nodded. "I'm from Lou'sana," she said. She had noticed Martha talked different, kind of like Mary Poppins, and she tried to remember where the magical nanny was from. "Are you from," she paused, her face scrunching up a little as she though. "...London?"
She reached for the plate of cookies while she waited for an answer, dragging it towards her with her fingertips, bringing it down so that they could both reach them with no problem.
Martha didn't know where 'Lou'sana' was, but she guessed that it had to be somewhere in America. Whenever there was a place that she didn't know where it was, it almost always happened to be from there. And the girl sounded different, so it made sense that's where she lived. A rather large grin broke over her face when she asked where she was from. "Yeah, I'm from London! I live there with my mum and my brother and Leo." Her mouth opened to start to say her dad, but he had just recently moved out.
The cookies brought an immediate smile to her face, and she grabbed the smallest one quickly and took a rather large bite of it. It tasted weird, but the familiar taste of the jam in the middle (it was the best part) made her smile.
"I have a brother too," Abby said, eyeing the plate of cookies and finally picking one up. Martha seemed to really like them. "He's littler than me and follows me a lot but he's okay."
She bit into the cookie and chewed a bit before deciding that she liked it. It wasn't an Oreo or even a Nutter Butter but it wasn't bad.
"These are pretty good," she said, nodding as she picked up another one.
"Yeah?" Martha said quickly, and she grinned at her new friend, because Abby definitely was one of Martha's new friends. Martha had intentionally blocked out Tish from talking about her family, cause she had been rather angry about her sister before she'd ended up here. "What's his name? Leo follows me about too!" Well, it was kinda the other way around, but Abby didn't need to now that.
"I like 'em." She said taking another bite of her cookie.
"Benjamin," Abby replied, taking another coookie from the plate and twisting it apart, licking the filling. "But we all just call him Benny."
No sign there had ever even been filling now, she finally ate the cookie part, crunching them loudly for fun. "He would love this," she said, missing him a little for the first time. "He's never seen snow before."
