So, as you may know, the Twilight University professors attended a very special midnight screening of the Twilight movie. And the people there really were *special*. This was the entire reason to go the midnight showing: to experience the total insanity. We are not judging...that much. Okay, we kind of are, but with a total understanding of where these girls are coming from. (Hey, we have a journal devoted to Twilight. Who are we?)
An Overview: There were a total of four sold-out shows at midnight at our non-local theater. According to our multiple calls to the theater, the lines to get a seat (because they already had tickets) started forming at about 3 in the afternoon. Number of lecherous TwiMoms: Too many.
These girls were GIDDY. They were EXCITED. They wanted to SHARE THEIR EXCITEMENT with the entire theater. They were also very well prepared. Dozens of girls brought the book to read. (In some cases, they brought all three books. WTF?) Almost every person in the theater was wearing a TwiShirt of some kind. (Most common: Hot Topic varieties. Scariest: Homemade shirt that said "I'd Imprint That." Eeek.) We were done playing Twilight Movie Bingo in about 3 minutes. It was too easy.
What is there to do in the intervening 3 hours? Well, if you are 250 TwiMoms and teenage girls, the answer is simple. The answer is: Make up cheers about Edward! And then about Jacob! And then about both of them! And perform them in front of the screen! And add unvirtuous dance moves that Edward would definitely not approve of! Time taken up: 15 minutes. Amount of time that that stupid cheer was stuck in my head: 14 motherfucking hours. (There was also a very closely policed game of telephone being mandated by 13 year olds. Telephone is no longer fun when you have to walk down the aisles forcing everyone to participate. Or when you are older than 10.)
We were extremely surprised at the lack of reluctance on the part of the boyfriends. With two exceptions, the boys looked to be equally into the TwiSanity.* And were wearing Theme Shirts. I would like to believe that all of these guys were Mormon. So I will.
There was also one very smart 15/16 year old boy who dressed like Edward in the movie--with the peacoat and what have you. And girls lost their shit. They swarmed and took pictures and maybe tried to take his clothes off. It was possibly the most effective way to pick up teenage girls that I have ever seen in my life. He could have totally scored. Maybe he snuck into one of the girls' rooms later that night to watch her sleep.
So, all around a great night...mostly of laughing at others. And ourselves. Now I am wondering if all of the midnight shows were this crazy or if it depended on the theater. Because I would definitely recommend seeing this movie with a bunch of psyched superfans. Or even just one boy who is dressed like Edward.
*I am just going to start adding Twi- to the beginning of every word. Twi-riffic!
