A confluence of time and gravy.

The snow is light, powdery. Water turned into the finest snow. You can blow it off rails and cars, explode it into the air like a thought. It circles back on itself in the air, curls as it falls and makes me think about being immersed in a stream and the different between air an water. Me and a fish or whale or seal.

It came two nights signalled an end, "falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of [our] last end, upon all the living and the dead." Wrapped up the holiday, the time for people to unfold back into their lives elsewhere.

Somewhere under this cast of winter there is something broken, changing. Something encased, in chrysalis, mends, catches over itself like the bay freezing.
When the sun comes humming like a vibrating saw, radiant, when the pupa cracks, what fingers will reach skyward?

Spent the holidays buried in with family and food. My mother's lemon meringue pie and cinnamon rolls. Glazed ham, chocolates, Kinder Surprise Eggs, gravy, potato in its many guises.

The holidays become some time machine, bringing old faces back home, making now echo with then. History fills up familiar places with the past and life comes together in some crashing juxtaposition. For four days, a week tops, everything collapses in on itself and everything is happing in conjunction. You can touch the way everything in the present is infused with everything that's come before.

I've become addicted to TV on DVD. I've watched the entire series of Six Feet Under in the last few months and have moved on now to Dexter. I've got The Office and the first two seasons of The Sopranos from Drew waiting in the wings. Season 2 of Boston Legal from some customers from work (I've already watched their copy of season 1). Yikes. Making up for all those nights of TV I lost to working in the video store I guess.

Can't help but feel like I'm backing into the New Year the same way I backed into Christmas. Or had it sneak up on me. Or in some other manner was not confronted by it face on.
