[The Sphere is turned on very deliberately for once. Roxas isn't looking at it as it floats up into the air, getting a view of his surroundings ( Read more... )

[Riku knows by now.

it takes some time, but eventually he steps onto the beach, walking quietly up to stand beside him]

[he doesn't react. doesn't even move.]

[Riku's expression is blank, gaze empty as it rests on the slowly churning waves]

It's like waking up from a good dream. He's here and then gone, like he'd never been in the first place.

... I know. I had dreams of him all the time, when I was searching. Even after I found him, it took weeks before I started to .. actually believe he'd still be there when I woke up.

Of course you never get to say good-bye.

[very quietly] I lost Sora a long time ago. Seeing him again was...a gift. A reprieve. I'm not sure if it was ever meant to last.

[shoots him a sudden glare, sharp and almost .. offended. his brows are drawn down and a frown pulls his lips thin, but he doesn't say anything in reply.]

[Riku wasn't looking at him, but he could practically feel the glare when it hit him]

Roxas...if not for this ship, I wouldn't have seen him again. You know that better than I do. The last time we would have been together, just us and Kairi, would be when I was nine. Almost eleven years, now.

.. [he heaves a sigh and looks away, rubbing the heel of his palm into his eye]

I haven't even been alive for eleven years.

.. you don't know for certain how the future will turn out, Riku.

[a small, empty smile; it's easy to forget how "young" Roxas is, even now, in comparison to him]

It's easy to say that. That the future is uncertain, or that we can still change it.

But I don't believe it. We already know that if we ever do leave, we won't remember this. History will continue the same way.

[faintly] It will never stop being weird that I'm older than you are, but technically, I've only been alive about half as long as you have.

[shakes his head] We know what's going to happen, sure. But we don't know what happens after that. We don't know how all of this ends. Not yet.

I guess that makes me the old man in this situation.

[he's quiet for a little while, thinking that over] ...I know Sora will win. Him and Kairi, and you and Naminé, I believe in my heart that you will. But I do know that there's no way to bring a Nobody back. In over three hundred years, wouldn't the Organization have found it by now?

[his rejoinder is instantaneous and firm]

And I am the first of my kind in all of those three hundred years. I am the first Nobody Keyblader ever to exist. Don't you think they would have found a way to create one sooner, if they could?

[quietly] Knowing Sora -- and what he can do -- there may be other firsts still coming.
