Adam's return

Apr 20, 2009 13:02

Spencer Reid's eyes grew wide as he listened to the Nurse on the other end of the phone line.
"Are you sure it's him? Amanda seems to be a pretty clever persona. It's possible she may have found a way to mimic Adam."
There was a pause, and someone winmpered in fear in the background. Finally the nurse answered. "No, it's definantly him. He seems frightened, and very disoriented. Amanda wouldn't stoop that low."
Reid breathed a sigh of relief. It was almost over.
"Okay, I'm on my way."

Adam sat cowering in the corner. His pulse raced as he stared around him in fear. He had woken up that morning in a strange room, wearing women's night garments. There had only been one set of men's clothing in the place and he had hurried to put it on. Oh, god...not again....Please, don't make me...Stay away....Please, please don't touch me...not like that...
Images swam through his mind, things he had tried desperately to forget. His stomach churned at the memories of what his father-his own father- had done to him. He curled into a fetal position, a sob racking his body.
He jumped to his feet, startled as a man entered the room. A man. Dear God, tell me this isn't real.
The man stared at him, stared at him with....worry. And concern. Nothing like the sick, greedy way his father once looked at him.
"Please...I don't know what I did, but..." He wimpered. An echo of his past, when he would try to fend off his father's humiliating "Punishments."
The man held his hand out. "Adam? It's okay. I promise I won't hurt you. My name is Detective Reid, but you can call me Spencer, okay."
Adam nodded reluctantly. There was something soothing and familiar about that voice. Then it dawned on him.
"Wait...Reid! Hey, you guys were working that murder at the hotel. Did you ever catch that guy?"
Spencer nodded sadly. "Uh, sort of..."
Adam was confused. "Sort of? Did you catch him or not?"
Spencer sighed and gestured for Adam to sit down. "Adam, The killer was...was you."
He stared in disbelief. "Me? That's impossible! I've never...and the things you were saying that guy did, that was sick, man. I would never..."
"Not you," The detective began patiently, "But someone in you. Adam, what your father did to you, well, it traumatized you. You were defenseless, so you made up a person to protect you. A second personality."
"A what?!?"
"She is the one who was killing those men. You, but at the same time, not you."
Still confused. He felt weak, helpless. A tear ran down his cheek. He needed strength. He needed Julie. Why wasn't she here? Did she even care for him? Of course she did.
"Where's Julie?" He squeaked.
Spencer sighed. "Adam, listen to me. Julie isn't here right now, but she said she would get here as soon as she can."
"I want her now."
"I'm afraid she's out of town."
"I don't care! I WANT JULIE!!!!"
"Adam, calm down. It's okay."
He spun, and for a moment his head began to throb. "It's not okay! I'm not crazy, and I'm not gay."
"I know that."
"I swear to God , I'm not gay, okay," He repeated, quieter this time. he needed this man to believe him.
Spencer gently lay a hand on his shoulder. "You grew up seeing the male figure as a threat. Naturally, you see females as a sort of savior. Therefore, when you created this protector, she was obviously going to be female."
Adam sat silent, thinking. This explained everything. The blackouts. The moods. Everything.
"She got a name?"
Reid paused to clear his throat. "Yes. She...She calls herself Amanda. Apparently until now, she was aware of your existance, but you were oblivious to hers. It's quite common in cases like this."
Reid stood, and began to show Adam the recorded conversations with his other half. He was horrified by what he saw. When it was over, Adam curled into a ball, his head resting on his knees.
"How...how will I know if she's trying to come back?"
Spencer thought for a moment. "Adam, I think Amanda's Emergings and your migraines are connected. They seem to get worse when she's around."
A small sob shook Adam's body. "Help me..."
"It's okay. We are going to get you and Amanda the help you need. there are medications for this type of thing. Also, we can get you someone to talk to."
Adam glared at him stubbornly. "I like talking to you."
"Okay. That's perfectly okay. And Adam?"
He stared at the floor. "Yeah?"
"Don't worry. You are going to be okay."
