Family
A single small box in a single rough hand, held out to him. His hands shook as he took it, not daring to look up, not daring to hope that he’d see what he needed in those older eyes, not daring to even think about what he’d do if he didn’t.
Trembling, he opened the box. His eyes widened, he held his breath. This was -
“Remus,” Harry said, ghosting his hands over the contents of the box. He looked up, and Remus smiled, very faintly.
“I don’t have much to give,” Remus whispered, as if the very air around him would shatter if he spoke any louder. “But,” he continued, “if you want this… I can - it’s something I can give.”
Harry looked at him and then at the box again. Slowly, he pulled out a simple golden key, tied up in a single green ribbon. His eyes flickered back to Remus. Carefully, he untied the ribbon, and felt a familiar jerking behind his navel.
When the world stopped spinning, he was on Remus’s couch, said man right beside him. “You really…?” Remus trailed off, nervousness clear in his expression.
“The war’s over. I can. I want to. You’re the real family I have left; you always have been, even when you haven’t been around. It’s what I have left. There are others, but they’re not… Mum and Dad would’ve had you take me in, after Sirius. I want to stay with you,” Harry said, moving closer to him.
“In what sense?” Remus breathed.
“They wouldn’t want us lonely.”
“In what sense?” Remus asked again.
“This one.” Harry lounged himself over Remus’s body, and kissed him full on the mouth.
