Feathers
Hitomi had never forgotten what Folken had looked like when he died. It wasn't his blank eyes, or even the blood that pooled around him that stuck with her. It was the wings.
Hitomi had never thought she'd be so horrified to see black feathers. Remembering Folken's words, that the wings of a Draconian only turned black when they were close to death...
Even on Earth, she shivered when she saw a lone black feather, perhaps from a crow or raven, and thought of death.
But not Folken's death. Van's. She remembered Escaflowne turning black when Van would not come back on his own. Had wondered, months later, if his wings would have been black if she'd seen them before he'd woken up and saved both of their souls in that place in between.
She'd never voiced this to anyone. Had kept her fear of the black feathers to herself, had never brought it up, and pushed it out of her mind when Van would take her flying.
And though it was selfish, Hitomi couldn't help but hope that she would never have to see the dark wings again, see what looked like a fallen angel.
Even if it meant lying to Van, and saying she just didn't want to fly.
