Characters: Van Fanel and Kanzaki Hitomi

It was the witching hour, and Hitomi had no idea where her bed-partner was. She'd woken alone before, but generally it was because he would sneak out of bed to surprise her with tea (sweet with honey though he always told her she didn't need it - at which point she'd cuff him lightly for being corny, though inwardly she loved the tease), or to go to a meeting that, even a year later, he still tried to prevent her from going to (but granted, that was because they were boring. Dead boring. In fact, if Hitomi hadn't felt such an obligation, she probably wouldn't go), or to go through his katas (or whatever he called them - Hitomi couldn't quite pronouce the word yet, though she was learning).
So while this was an odd occurrence, Hitomi was rarely suddenly awake like this. In fact, usually she only woke up because Van came back, and bumped her trying to cuddle again (which she never failed to tease him for).
But she had a feeling she'd be able to find her bed-partner fairly quickly. Slipping on a robe, and her slippers, Hitomi stepped silently into the room just a door away, and peered in.
And lo, there he was. Van Fanel, the warrior-king of Fanelia and a hero of Gaea, was standing in the dark, rocking his baby boy to sleep as best he could, the picture being lit every so often by the flash of lightning in the window behind the pair.
Hitomi smiled, and crept back to bed.
This, she reflected, was a bonding moment.
And blackmail, she pondered, for when Ilario became rebellious and claimed he had no need for his parents.
