Title: Lonely

Character(s)/Pairing(s): Bella
It’s one of those rare, sunny days in Forks. The sun beams down from above, coating the school in a soft, warm light. It isn’t too hot, but the air is dry, humid; it hasn’t rained for more than a week. Bella sighs as she walks to where Jessica and Angela sit, lying on their backs in the sun. He’s not here. He hasn’t been here for days. She’s lonely and bored and she misses Edward’s arm around her shoulders, or his hand in hers. She knows she’ll see him tonight but it doesn’t matter, she wants him here, now.

“Hey, Bells,” Angela says as she comes to sit beside her.
“Hey,” she replies.
Angela smiles at her softly, kindly. She knows that when Bella sits with her it’s because Edward’s not at school and when Edward’s not at school Bella’s usually unhappy. “The Cullen’s off again?” she asks.
Bella nods, her expression forlorn.
“Don’t they ever ask you to come?”
Bella smirks a little to herself - her on a hunting trip with the Cullens? - and shakes her head. “Nah, family bonding time. You don’t get much dry weather in Forks, they take advantage of it.”
“Well, we should too.”

At Angela’s words, Jessica perks up. “Visit La Push, you mean?” she asks.
Angela nods. “We really should, this weather isn’t going to last forever. What do you think, Bella? Wanna come?”
Bella hesitates. Edward might not let her go to La Push, or at least he wouldn’t be very happy with her. She doesn’t want to anger him, but she does want to spend some time with her friends. Besides, as Angela said, the dry weather was a nice change and it wasn’t going to last forever. She should take advantage of it.
“Sure, I’d love to,” she says.

Edward isn’t happy at all. They’re in her bedroom, to window open to let fresh air in.
“I just don’t see why you have to go,” Edward is saying. “You could just as well go to a movie with Angela and Jessica if you so wanted.”
Bella throws her hands in the air. “And miss out on all this lovely weather?! Edward, it’s only dry in Forks for a couple of days a year, I am so not missing out on it.”
Edward sighs. “Bella, if you must go, I will not stop you. Please, just think about it.”
“Fine.”

“Have you thought about it yet?”
Bella’s standing at her window sill, looking out onto her street front. It’s been so long since the weather’s been this nice, too long. It’s nowhere near as hot as Phoenix, where you sometimes stepped outside and shrivel up from the hot, airless heat. But at least it’s dry. Constant rain is not good for the soul.
“Yes, I have. I still want to go.” She turns around so she’s looking at the boy on her bed. “I bet Jake won't even be there, Edward, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Alright, you can go.”

The weather is still warm at the beach, but there is a cool wind blowing. Jessica is out deep, trying to catch the few waves that roll towards the shore. Angela is up to knees in water, laughing lightly as she jumps over the waves. Bella stands at the shore, the waves just reaching her ankles. She’s not really one for water, or getting wet at all. Still, it’s nice down here, and she’s with her friends. Jake is nowhere to be seen, but she doesn’t really mind. She smiles to herself and begins to wade just a bit deeper.

Jacob appears a little bit later, trailed by Quil and Embry. His face breaks out into a huge grin when he sees Bella.
“Bells!”
“Hey, Jake,” she replies, smiling easily.
Jake stands beside her while his friends dive into the waiting water.
“You’re not swimming?” he asks.
He, of all people, should know she doesn’t swim. “No, of course not. I prefer to stay dry.”
Jake smiles devilishly at her and, before she can stop him, ducks down to cup water in his palms and splash her.
“Jake!” she cries as the water wets her clothes.
Jake laughs, grinning impishly.

It doesn’t take long for her clothes to dry, the sun still beaming down heavily, so Bella can’t stay mad at Jake for long. Jessica and Angela come out of the water for lunch, and the Quileute boys join them to eat the picnic Bella had prepared. Bella smiles contentedly as she sits back and lets her friends chatter. As much as she loves Edward, it’s nice to go out with other people every so often.
“Thanks, Bells,” Jake tells her. “We should do this again sometime.”
His words are met with a chorus of agreement and smiles all round.

Later that night Bella is tucked into bed, wrapped in Edward’s arm, a happy, peaceful smile on her face.
“I’m glad it stayed dry for you, my love,” Edward whispers softly for her. “I’m glad you enjoyed yourself.”
Bella smiles and burrows deeper into Edward’s embrace. “It was very nice.” Her words are slightly slurred as she speaks, fatigue clouding her voice.
“You had a big day,” Edward tells her, kissing her forehead, “you should try and sleep. Maybe we can do something together in the morning.”
Bella nods sleepily. “Of course, Edward.”
Held tightly in his arms, she slept.
