the REAL truth

ok, so since a couple people have been asking whats been going on...

I was supposed to graduate this august when I come home from my study abroad trip to prague. I was worried that I might have to graduate later, because I was failing my merchandise math class, and I needed it to complete my minor. I recieved my final grade in that class last night, and I have D. It's a shitty grade, but within my program regulations it's still considered passing. However, I will still be staying at western until December. Here's why:

I recieved an email from my apparel construction teacher last friday afternoon. It said to please see her if I was interested in doing an internship with a local designer. I was ridiculously excited, and emailed her back to tell her so. By some sort of amazing freak accident, I ran into my teacher at the student fashion show on saturday night. she happened to be sitting right next to the woman who was offering the internship, and introduced me. I spent about two minutes talking to her during intermission, and the more I talked to her, the more excited I got. She seemed to be everything I could possibly dream of wanting, she's a quilter and apparel designer, has a massive studio in schoolcraft, and is very into knitting and felting, which she also incorporates into her work. Intermission and I had to go back to my seat.

At the end of the show I ran into my teacher again on the way out of the ladies room. She told me to email the woman if I was interested, and get my portfolio ready, since I was the only one she had recommended, but that there would most likely be other girls interviewed for the internship. This made me really nervous, because my portfolio is really shakey right now and not very pulled together.

So I emailed the woman, Debra Youngs, and told her how excited I was, and that I really wanted to apply for the internship. Within three hours I recieved this email from her:

Dear Amber,
I was so happy to see your email today. You are the one I have chosen to be my intern. I would very much like to talk to you about it very soon as I am not sure if you will be around all summer... going home???
I will try to give you a call tonight after 7 and hopefully we will be able to meet very soon!
I will be writing your teachers to let them know that you are my choice!
I was very impressed with the few moments that we were able to talk. You remind me VERY MUCH of myself at your age. The fact that you are interested in so many different crafts intrigued me. I look forward to learning more about you as well as your skills. I think you have lots of skills to explore and I look forward to helping (encouraging you) to do just that.
Debra (and you can call me that)!

She cancelled all of her other interviews and hired me directly! The crazy thing about this intership is that TWO of my teachers liked me well enough to recomend me. Out of hundreds of students in my program, I was the only one they recomended. THis internship is pretty special. Debra is a designer for Bernina sewing machines, which are pretty much the top of the line. Bernina chose their top five designers internationally and sponsored them to mentor a student. I am one of the only five chosen. I will spend the next six months working with Debra to design a line that we will showcase at a Bernina fashion exhibition in Chicago the first weekend of december. She has a studio with TWELVE BRAND NEW BERNINA MACHINES that I can use as often as I would like. The more I talk to her, the more I like her, and the more excited I get.

So I went to campus yesterday and took care of some business. I deffered graduation until december, and I applied for some classes. fall semester is going to be awesome. I am taking Apparell 2, I will b e the TA for Apparell 1, I moved the math class I was going to take this summer to the fall, and I got approved for an independant study to design my own fashion line. I intend to join MODA, and hopefully show my line in the fall fashion show.

Hey Theresa! Where are you?!?! I want to join the laureate with you in the fall, if i can, also, call me! I want to hang out with you sometime!

The best internship I could have possibly dreamed up just fell into my lap without me having to do anything at all. Is this even possible?
