I don't know why I feel this need to post this here, but I was just talking to a friend and I got a little pissed off. So here is lesson time with me!
So there's this concept of an exempt employee vs. a non-exempt employee. An exempt employee is exempt from overtime laws because of the nature of their work. To even consider being called an exempt employee, you have to be paid at least twice minimum wage. With some industries and professions, it's even higher. After that, its based on your job duties. That's duties, not title. So if you're company calls you CEO, but 99% of your job is sweeping floors, you are not an exempt employee.
Here are the people who are: people in management positions, computer programmers, artists, office managers, and quite a few people in the professional field.
If you feel like perhaps you shouldn't be exempt and you are, or you should be and you aren't, please take a long look at your employer and evaluate if they're treating you fairly.
