Ouroboros

Alexander knows well the beauty of snakes. As a child, his mother’s pets had crawled into his crib, rubbed their smooth, scaly skin against his, drawing away his warmth into their cold reptile bodies. In India he has seen hooded cobras charmed, moving sinuously back and forth, hypnotizing all who gaze at them. It is the snake’s slow dance that sends rupees into the musician's lap. The snake can contort its body, mend and create arabesques that curl into forever, both dazzling and humbling people with its intricacies.

Hephaistion hates snakes. Because of this, Alexander refuses to keep any as curiosities, although he is sorely tempted by the new ones he discovers, trampling through jungle, desert and snowy plateaus on his military expeditions.

Each snake has its own shape, its own colors, but in each of their gem eyes, Alexander touches the same infinity.

“What are you doing?” Hephaistion asks.

Alexander starts from his contemplation at the palace window and smiles crookedly at his lover. Alexander’s fingers rub over the gold decoration on his cup, over the small creature that curls around the goblet’s stem. He will send it to his mother.

“Nothing,” Alexander finally answers, pressing the cup to Hephaistion’s lips. Hephaistion raises an eyebrow, but he drinks deeply of the red wine it holds. Alexander watches as his Adam’s apple bobs, a movement that is jerky, too fast and without finesse.

When Hephaistion dies, Alexander travels to Egypt. The Pharaoh’s circlet sits on his head, a snake poised to strike. The Oracle looks up, her face struck dumb by his unexpected appearance. Alexander’s eyes blaze. He does not waste any time and makes his demands bluntly.

Hephaistion hates snakes, and so, Alexander must find immortality for him.
