Attack of the Obese! (dun dun DUUUHHHHH!)

Jul 26, 2007 08:57

Run! Run, skinny people! Before we infect you like the ravaging, shambling, hungry horde that we are! Save yourselves before you catch the FAT! (insert B-movie shrieking here)

Seriously. They're suggesting that being obese is contagious. When you associated with fat people, you get the idea that it's okay to have a larger body type. You think I'm joking? The study's author, Prof. Nicholas Christakis, explains it in the following quote from the article:

"What appears to be happening is that a person becoming obese most likely causes a change of norms about what counts as an appropriate body size. People come to think that it is OK to be bigger since those around them are bigger, and this sensibility spreads."

There you go. Fat people are making other people fat by association. Oh, but the silver lining to the cloud? They can probably come up with a way so that fat people with skinny friends can be convinced that it's NOT OKAY for us to be fat! The skinny people can be like T-cells fighting our hideous disease!

(growling) I don't know for certain that the authors of this study feel this way. I'm looking ahead to how the lay person is going to hear it, at this biased misinterpretation of the data from this one lone study. Wait for it. It's coming. Forget World War Z, it's not the necropocalypse you have to worry about, oh no. It's not that we're going to eat your brains, we're just going to eat all your food until you, too, waddle your ass to Old Country Buffet to dine unceasingly. Join us... joooiiinnnn usssss... one of us, one of us...
