district 10
Just signed up for tesserae and got randomly sorted into District 10. And I was like fuckdammit. I wanted District 3 because, dude, I'm a physics major at UC fucking Berkeley and, like, I belong in 3. Seriously. (Though a friend of mine said I would be from 4 because the water is my home and I swim like a fish. I would have been fine with 4. I also would have been okay with 7, but that's just because I like the number 7 and Johanna's a bitch in every good sense of the word--she is Arya Stark all grown up. (Did I mention I am digging A Song of Ice and Fire as my summer series??) And Arya Stark is like Lyra Silvertongue is like my childhood hero.) But no. I'm in 10.
...And then I read District 10 Represent's blurb:
Even though we're not the most popular district in Panem, hey, we can hold our own. In the 74th Annual Hunger Games alone, the male tribute - who had a crippled leg, no less - survived for a pretty long time. We're survivors (emphasis mine).
Okay, so he didn't survive the whole Games, but you know what? I knew from the first time I read those books that I would have died in, like, the first two and half minutes. So fuck yeah, I am a femsexy survivor. My username is Yakotta, and nameless cripple kid and I shall be comrades!
So basically, my experience can be summed up by a tumblr post:

But then I thought about the animals (farm animals are kind of scary)
But then I read 10's sweet description.
Well, okay, maybe I wasn't that excited, but whatever.
And just to make it better, I'm going to pretend like District 10 is in California. I know that most fan-made maps (like this amazing one by aimmyarrowshigh) put 10 in the Midwest, since they sink California beneath the beautifully blue Pacific Ocean (and this actually keeps with a few scientific projections of what global warming/climate change will do to the continents, including the future predicted by this youtube video.) But there are places in the state that raise cattle (I know, I've smelled them when driving to Tahoe or LA and Orange County), so clearly this could work. And besides, California is the best state ever, so there.
