i got a job at fedex. i started training wednesday and thursday. then friday was supposed to be my first day but i had a doctor's appointment so my first day is tomorrow.
so about that doctors appointment.. i've been going to the doctor's at OHSU (Oregon Health and Science University) the past 6 months because my ear has been bothering me. for those of you who don't know, when i was little i had a cyst in my ear on one of the 3 bones of my inner ear. i had 3 surgeries, the first one they took the cyst off and the second, the cyst grew back. and instead of just taking the cyst out, the doctor took the whole bone out and put a fake one in. this basically eliminated the chance of the cyst growing back... again. but then it grew back anyway, but not in the same spot, the 3rd time just on the canal so it wasn't as big a deal. but the result of having 3 surgeries is i lost about 70%? of my high frequency hearing in my left ear. back to now.. my ear has been hurting and bleeding and producing fluids that don't look like they belong in ones ear. so i go in and the doctor says that the prostesis is trying to push itself out. so, either i keep going in when it hurts until the prostesis completely pushes its way out of my ear, or i have to have 2 surgerie's to fix the said prostesis.
the first surgery will consist of them cutting off my ear and taking out the current prostesis, then building scar tissue to bridge the gap of the missing bone. then sewing my ear back on of course. the second, in 6-9 months, will be to replace the prostesis with basically a new model. the reason they don't do it all at once is if they were to put in a new prostesis during the current state of infection, my body will basically try to push the foreign body out and i'll be back to where i am now within a year and then they have to do 2 surgeries to correct the first one. so basically they're eliminating the third step. the bad news is, other than having 2 more surgeries is... the fact that for 6-9 months (between the 2 surgeries) i'll be missing a bone in my ear. the result of that by the sound of the doctor's explanation is that i'll be really def in my left ear instead of just partially. i really don't know how this'll turn out in the end but i'm hoping when i have the second surgery i'll be able to gain some of the lost hearing back, at least to be where i am now. i schedule the surgery tomorrow, i hope it'll be soon. i'll keep posting i guess, even though only.. 3 people that i know of read this thing. hi geoff, kate vogey and danielle.
