1. Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis
2. The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene
4. Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston
6. The Lives of a Cell by Lewis Thomas

The ending was unsurprising but satisfyingly inevitable: Scobie at last reaches the peace he deserves. I've been aware of this ending since he's had nightmarish visions foreshadowing his own demise in the same vein as Pemberton's.

Suicide is a contagious disease: when in the company of suicidal persons, there is only one of two paths to follow.

1. Live fiercely. Contract this disease, overcome it. Above all: live fiercely.
2. Contract this disease and kill yourself.

There are so many things I want to quote. I can't count the number of times I was reading this novel and came across a passage that spoke so clearly and absolutely about the stuff of human life.

Thus: "It isn't beauty that we love, he thought, it's failure... Beauty is like success: we can't love it for long."
