So thirsty. But I mustn't risk drinking Troy water; I've already had too many bad experiences from it. D: Anyway, I have more notes on this series before my head asplodes.
"The Waterbending Master" (1018):
→ Ahh, the Northern Water Tribe is so pretty~! ♥ I love the palaces and the gandolas-that-aren't-gandolas and the entrance mechanism. It's scenes like this that truly make me appreciate how lovely watching this show can be sometimes.
→ Awww, Yue is so sweet. <3 I think she's a beautiful character in all senses of the word. She makes a lovely foil to Katara, who is much less calm? and passive than Yue.
→ "I'll be outside if you're man enough to fight me." ← KATARA, WE LOVE YOU. Even though you are pushy and sometimes too opinionated/argumentative for your own good, you are my feminist hero. ♥ She is like the Rosie the Riveter! of A:TLA. I have so much respect for her for trying to beat the crap of out that misogynistic bastard.
"The Siege of the North (2)" (1020):
→ The season finale was so sad and so beautiful. ;_; I really like Sokka and Yue as characters in their own right, and I don't mind seeing them together romantically, but did it have to eventuate in such tragedy? D: To be in love with the moon! To be in love with a fish. I see so many fic possibilities for their relationship post-episode 20.
→ Zuko's compassion with Zhao makes me love him even more. I didn't think it was possible, but every time this boy surprises me with something new. He makes my heart seize in my throat. ♥
"The Cave of Two Lovers" (2002): Hmm, I don't think Aang and Katara kissed in this episode, but perhaps my bias is tainting my interpretation, which is why I'm asking. Did they kiss? From the way the scene panned out and their resulting interactions with each other, I'm thinking no, but I want to be sure. ^^;
"The Swamp" (2004): A:TLA meets Miyazaki? I'm thinking yes. ^^; Very beautiful episode (thematically); I loved how the themes were presented in a way that didn't make it sour going down. The producers weren't trying to moralize or lecture, which I respect. I really understand now the beauty behind so much of the A:TLA fic that I've read, because of episodes like this one. <3
"The Blind Bandit" (2006):
→ TOPH. ♥ I think she's my favorite female character in this series, hands down. I love this girl when she's doing the helpless act and wearing girly dresses and tiaras; I love this girl when she's kicking the ass out of ripped men and wearing men's shorts and smirking because she knows she's the shit. My only regret is that she couldn't embody both of her personas. She has to be one or the other, but I miss a show with a girly girl who can still (physically) kick a lot of ass (e.g., CCS!Sakura).
→ Also: I shop like Sokka. (Not in that I blame others when I have buyer's regret, but myself.) But we're basically the same; I find a lot of myself in Sokka, though Sokka, I think, has the charming faculty of being able to represent our flaws in a most loving and, ultimately, forgiving light.
Zuko is something else entirely. For one thing, I truly respect the family dynamics between Uncle Iroh and him; they recall my own family dynamics with my father, though to a lesser extent. For another thing, I believe every child has Zuko in him. Everyone wishes their father didn't think them worthless. Zuko represents the complexities of teenage adolescence--of trying vainly to find one's identity, of having power but being ultimately helpless, of resisting what we know to be our destiny.
In general, I just really respect all the family dynamics that come into play in this show, Sokka and Katara's included. I love that even though Sokka has feelings for Yue (which he does not claim to be love, a level-headedness which I also admire), Katara's is the first name he calls when the group is under attack/in trouble. He really has an overprotective streak. I'd ship them (GO INCEST!) if I weren't so sold on Yue. :)
