Lovely day gardening with Isobel today. Got a huge mess of plants from Jayn's & Beaty's gardens yesterday & had nowhere to put them, so we went out to dig up the little rectangle of patchy grass and weeds in front of my bedroom window. With a shovel.
It only took a couple hours, though might've gotten finished faster if I hadn't had to keep chasing Isobel chasing Inga chasing Patches around the house. Once she discovered the magic of earthworms, however, she stayed pretty close. I think we might've killed the only three in the whole garden though, as she insisted on holding them & carried a couple around for a while. "Worm! Pet!" she says, and I acquiesce. I'll order a bunch of them from the gardening catalog or pick some up at the market to make amends...
After a marathon nap, we drove to Christiansburg to pick up some compost & a cultivating fork so I can turn the soil over again tomorrow & hopefully get planting as well. I'm still trying to learn how to navigate I-81 to avoid driving through town, so when this trip's wrong turn landed us beside a Denny's I thought "Eh, why not?" and took Isobel in for pancakes. All the booths are by windows so she could look out at cars or birds & Mama had a vanilla Coke, so she had a pretty good time. I hope the 50% tip made up for the syrupy handprints on the window.
When we finally got home, she wanted a bit of cereal for a snack (the pancakes weren't enough, I guess?) and as I poured it into her bowl, she did a little dance & said "Happy...day! Happy...day!" Ah, I do love that child. Happy day, indeed. :)
