NAME: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu
SERIES: the World Ends With You
CANON POINT: Post-game.
HISTORY: At first, Joshua is just another player throughout the game and appears during Neku's second week of the game. Oh, right the game. The reaper's game is a game where dead people go and frolick, aiming for a second chance at life. It takes place in the UG (the underground) which is very similar to the RG (real ground--aka basically the real world without the dead people, this is currently taking place in modern day Shibuya, Tokyo). However, since the UG is basically the RG without the dead people, the people in the RG can't actually see any of these monsters, reapers or the dead people. In the UG there are monsters and people with reaper status running about and trying to kill you while you go on a "mission" assigned to you by the current Game Master of that week.
This missions usually have a time limit, are sent through text message (in fact--they are the only text messages you can get on your cell phone) and can be anything--defeating reapers, going to a place, finding an object, etc. The object of the game is to finish your mission or be erased, which usually involves killing several different monsters throughout the game; however it is speculated by other players can complete the mission and whoever is left can still survive the game.
Now the purpose of the game is to have people who lost their life have a second chance to gain that back, of course--they have to be worthy of such a gift. This is rewarded to them by the Composer who only runs the rules of the game and is rarely seen out of his throne room hidden base unless it is an emergency and is mostly seen through the Conductor (the second in command). Of course, people rarely obtain this gift and there is a sacrifice to playing this game for a week (which is the time span you get to prove yourself, usually). At the beginning of each game, the reapers take away what is most valuable to you (this can rage to your looks, your memory, a sibling, etc).
Now, Neku is a special case who is playing a second week of the game so he can join his first partner (Shiki Misaki) who had been taken to the RG. However, at the beginning of this week, he learns that Shiki is his entry fee and that if he fucks up, then Shiki in turn dies. Joshua then becomes his partner for the second week, greatly irritating Neku with his remarks and snide comments. However, Neku deals with him so Shiki won't die. However, throughout the week, Neku sees himself being friends with Joshua because their outlook on humanity is very similar (basically--they both hate it). Also, it is revealed that Joshua is a special player, who is in the RG but can also see the UG (it is not revealed about how he can do this however). It is also revealed that Joshua and Mr. Hanekoma (Neku's "helper" throughout the game) have some history together, where Joshua also states that he wants to defeat the Composer and control Shibuya.
Also, when Neku tries to scan him with his player pin, he also learns that Joshua was there during his time of death. Which causes Neku to accuse Joshua of killing him, also be the cause of tension in their last days together. However, when they battle the Game Master of that week (Sho Minamimoto) and Sho attempts to shoot Neku--Joshua supposedly sacrifices himself. And also shows Neku a final flashback, where it is revealed that it was Sho who shot Neku, but he was really going after Joshua.
Through out the duration of the third week, Neku feels guilty for never saying sorry for being an emo bitch accusing Joshua of killing him. However, his need to apologize to Joshua is short lived. Since Joshua somehow returns at the end of the third week, in Neku's final battle with the Conductor, Megumi Kitanji. Also, joining him in this fight are Shiki and Beat his partners in his first and third week. However, even after Neku beats Kitanji for one final time--there are many things about Joshua finally revealed.
Joshua didn't actually die, it is revealed that he teleported to an alternate universe/different world using his Composer powers. Also, that Shiki as his entry fee was a lie and that the Conductor can actually not take life. Neku was in fact used as Joshua's proxy for a game that Joshua (the Composer) and Kitanji (the Conductor) had simply to see if Shibuya should be destroyed. If Neku defeated Kitanji, then the Composer (through his proxy) would win and Shibuya would ultimately be destroyed. With Kitanji's timer finally running out, failing his mission and being erased--Joshua restores what are all of Neku's missing memories.
In these memories, Neku also finds out that Joshua was in fact his murderer just so Neku could play in the Reaper's Game for him. Joshua had halting Minamimoto's bullets in mid air and then killing Neku as originally intended. However, Joshua gives Neku one final chance and plays a little duel with him. Handing Neku a gun, a smirk on his face, he simply tells Neku he has 10 seconds to shoot and become the Composer for Shibuya.
And of course Neku can't shoot his friend.
Nothing else is revealed after that, except that Neku wakes up in the middle of Shibuya again instead of actually dying. Nobody really knows if Neku plays a fourth game to gain Shibuya back or Joshua has a change in heart and just brings all his friends back to life and restores Shibuya in the process.
PERSONALITY:
Now here is Joshua, when you first look at him, you just think he might be a priss, a prude. Although the grey hair and violet eyes are a little strange, there's nothing to be scared about, there's nothing about him that screams in power. Sure, the kid might be a little snobby, might be a bit too full of himself.
Joshua is a powerful 15 year old boy, and even then that might not even be his true age. Once he starts to open his mouth, you start to feel uncomfortable and a bunch of things come out of his mouth. He's blunt--but not honest, in fact Joshua is an expert liar and is never caught in a lie. Although he makes his nature fairly obvious, everyone seems to fall for the trick anyway. His position in power even makes him more intimidating and full of himself, since at some point you figure out this kid is a little weird.
He's not just a little weird. While he may not look like it, he is in fact very cruel and calculating. Joshua has no emotions to really speak of, using people as he pleases for his own gain. Everything is for his own gain, whether he forms a friendship with you, whether he might be nice to you for a couple of seconds--everything is a part of his master plan. He plans every single one of his moves carefully, keeping track of his lies and all.
Actually, Joshua has some morals to him. The fact that his position in power (the Composer) is to help humanity might be a hint (although his idea of "help" is obviously twisted). He sees humanity as a whole ignorant and in need of a change, so you won't see Joshua actually kicking a puppy or something, he might kill a man if it made the world a better place. And well, who knows, if you can prove yourself to be a better human he might just help you out. Of course, he would never admit in helping anyone over his dead body.
Another note with Joshua is that he's very light-hearted and teasing about practically everything; which makes him all the more heartless and explains why some people could get the wrong idea to trust him so often. He tries to make every moment seem not as terrible as it is, with a smirk on his face the whole time. Also, he speaks in eloquence at all times, showing his power in only his voice and the look in his eyes.
