I dislike the notion that a woman only has to look good if a man is around.
I also dislike the idea that you should only bother to put effort into your looks if you're going to be around other people.
Pshaw.
Today I went for lunch with a couple of girlfriends so I did a little light makeup, then threw on a sweater, skirt, some boots and a necklace. When I got there my friend said "oh good, you dressed up a bit too". I said 'not really', and then she went on to explain how her husband asked her who she was going to meet as she was getting ready to leave and zipping up her boots.
"I'm going for lunch with some friends today, remember?", she said.
"So why are you dressing up and putting on boots? Your friends won't care.", he replied.
"Maybe -I- care," she snapped, "maybe I don't get out as much or have the chance to dress up since the baby was born. Maybe I want to do it and feel pretty. Okay?"
(A smart man always walks away at this point. I can safely tell you he is a very smart man.)
Friday and Saturday nights spent alone are my favorite times to experiment with makeup. When I got home from my friend's place tonight (6 hours later than planned) I stripped down to throw on a black sundress and my fuzzy slipper boots, then tied up my hair and left on my necklace. A short while ago I threw on some dark grey eyeshadow for some smokey eyes and dramatic flare. But I'm not expecting company; in fact after three hours of playing Braid I'm getting a little braindead so I'll pop in a movie when my lasagna is done cooking.
But do I really need a guest to look nice? Should it matter? In my opinion, no and no.
I've also discovered today that I absolutely adore wearing boots. Even if I was somewhat dressed down I noticed that I was walking a little different in them. More confidence, more swing to the hips or whatever you want to call it.
I want more boots.
I also want my lasagna to cook faster.
