ok, so, since i cannot seem to create a coherent sentence this morning, here is my father's review of last night's show:
TG and I had planned to hit the Riviera show last night and then another opportunity arose that I thought we should take advantage of. I got a call from my old friend Jayne who told me Robyn Hitchcock had announced at his show on Friday that he was playing a free show at the Hideout on Saturday. This seemed too good to miss and so we didn't. We stood out side at 6 or so talking to some VCers and watched Jon Langford and Robyn go in. After the bar opened, we stood by the music room door and listened to the sound check. Many of the usual crowd of musicians was there including Kelly Hogan and Laurie Stirratt.
It started at 7 with a set by Jon Langford and Deano of the Waco Bros., playing a variety of covers and originals from their catalogue and getting the crowd worked up. Robyn came on immediately afterward and playing a small accoustic guitar and harmonica, ran through some of his catalogue and some covers as well. Jon and Deano joined him after about 45 minutes, as well as Kelly singing some back-up. They also ran through mostly covers. In all the covers included the Kinks, Dylan, Lennon, the Bee Gees, Bob Wills, Buddy Holly and some other old folk stuff. They ended the proceedings with a rousing rendition of "I wanna destroy you" and that was that. Another amazing Hideout moment.
We then headed over to Schubas for the Riviera show, which was fun as well. All three bands sounded great and we did pick up the new Riviera CD. It had been a long night and as it approached 1 AM (really 2AM), I figured it was time to call it a night, so we didn't stay until the end sadly.
Tonight the entire TG clan is going to see Dylan and Haggard at the Auditorium Theater, so I will report back on that tomorrow. Hope I make it through all this. There is just way too much to do in this town.
ps: eh, nat? :)
