FAY'S RECORD FOUR FLORIDA LANDFALLS

A lot of internet chatter this week surrounding whether or not the name FAY should be retired from the regular list of names used in the Atlantic basin. So far in history, only one Tropical Storm has had its name retired - Tropical Storm Allison, which many may recall produced historic flooding from Houston on up through the south and southeast back in 2001. While also a remarkably prolific rain producer, Fay may not yet have taken as many lives as Allison did.
However, some consideration must also be given to the very real possibility that FAY gets upgraded in post-season reanalysis to Category 1 (Hurricane) for part of its lifespan while inland over south Florida. A lot of surface observations would support such an upgrade.
And, as reported in
WeatherInsights®: The Weather Channel Blog:
Dr. Greg Forbes, TWC's severe weather expert, informs us that counting the tornadoes which have occurred since way back when Fay first started affecting Florida, if the tenative total holds up, Fay would be the most prolific tornado producer of any tropical storm (as opposed to hurricane) on record in the U.S..
Even if Fay is kept as a Tropical Storm in the record books, what a record Fay has! From crazy inland intensifications, widespread and record-setting torrential rains, record-setting number of Florida landfalls, and now, the most tornadoes produced by any Tropical Storm on record!
