Working the Web

This web stuff's funny. I haven't built sites since - oooh, way back in the early 2000s. Things sure have changed since then. Yes sir. Now it's all keywords and analytics and SEO. Whatever happened to "build it and they will come"? Oh, right - that was just a terrible Kevin Costner movie ( Read more... )

My feedback:

1. I think you're dead on with this remark:

"It seems I underestimated folks need to know how much things cost before they'll even make an enquiry."

I would find it awkward to contact someone and give them my information without having any idea whether it costs $100 or $1000. Maybe you could say something like "Pricing varies, but is generally between XYZ and XYZ."

2. If you want to hold on to the artistic value, "Get A Quote" doesn't feel like the appropriate language. "Request A Commission" or something else would seem better. Even "Get pricing information" or "Get an estimate" would work better here.

3. I think you need to provide more credentials. Why do I want a portrait from this person? Why is she qualified? Where has she exhibited? What awards has she won? Does she have a unique background or story that you can tell? There are a few sentences but not much to go on.

4. Not enough eye candy. The thumbnails are nice b/c they load quickly and make the site nimble but they also diminish the quality of the work. You want it to be immersive and dramatic. I think that'll help establish value and make it not seem like a student portfolio so much.

Check out these 2 and compare:

ALL THIS SAID, I think it's a lovely site. Really.

So do I. I'm changing the link to "Get an Estimate" right now...

The credentials side is funny. Ruth's exhibited a lot - but the work she exhibited was not portraiture, it was conceptual art. She's had artist-residence positions too. Perhaps a sort of resume section might work though.

you'd make a lousy politician, my man.

remember, the truth is FLEXIBLE.

you can say she exhibited at blah blah blah. you don't have to say that it was in a different category. that's being overly honest. plus, it's not like you're talking about 2 completely different fields. it's not much of a stretch.
