What next?

I've been wondering what kind of speculative thoughts other fans are having about series 4, and Doctor Who.

Does anyone else share my suspicion that the reason Torchwood series 4 is still up in the air, is because TPTB are keeping it under wraps 'til after the  Doctor Who end-of-year specials?

Also. ( Speculation about Doctor Who finale, possibly spoilery. )

In The Writers' Tale, RTD reveals that he wanted to bring Midshipman Frame back in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End, and that he planned to kill him off there. I've wondered if he's simply doing that in Tennant's finale instead.

It would be terribly cruel to pair Jack up with yet another lover who is going to die prematurely, so this does scare me. But I doubt that Frame will actually be set up to "replace" Ianto -- because Tovey is currently involved in Being Human. His role fills a similar function to Ianto in Torchwood-- ie, the kick-ass-woobie type character who gets lots of funny lines, and to put in in a similar role in DW/TW would just be a bit much, I think.

Oh boy. More dying?

What I imagine is a throwaway dig at Jack's character that would be clear to people who've seen TW, but not necessarily the whole audience. Not anything that would have permanent storyline consequences.

I just wouldn't be surprised if RTD used the chance to get another kick in while he can. I know it's already filmed, but he's obviously been unhappy with TW since before he wrote CoE.

I think the thing that scares me most is that we'll just see the same happy-go-lucky Jack as before on Doctor Who -- regardless of what they do with Midshipman Frame.

As sad as that would be, I could actually accept that, as long as they make it clear some time had passed for Jack. If they don't, I would think it a bit of a cop-out (oh god, my regionality is showing), but that's still better than MEANNESS in the writing. Which I do think CoE shows plainly. ("Secret science fiction super base"? HUH.)

Do you think there'd be a difficulty in having Jack act in a different way that he always did on Who, without going into what caused the change in demeanour on screen? If they seriously wanted to avoid mentioning CoE, they might have had Jack revert because of that.

Well, RTD has said that CoE won't be referred to at all in Doctor Who, which really doesn't sit right with me -- I think they could refer to it in a covert way that doesn't disturb the kiddies -- for instance, in the same way that Owen and Tosh got a mention in The Stolen Earth/Journey's End. You know, I think it would be great to give us some sign that Jack is keeping his promise to remember Ianto -- but not gonna happen, apparently.

I just have this horrible feeling that Doctor Who will be used to "reset" Jack to his "happy" state, and that when he returns to Torchwood, we don't get to deal with the ramifications of CoE at all -- just as CoE didn't really deal with the ramifications of Exit Wounds-- Jack not being disturbed by being buried alive for 2000 years, etc.

You know, we could fanwank the live-burial-no-consequences, 100%, even, depending on which theory we subscribed to, but I can't imagine fanwanking CoE. Jack was hurt so badly, that can't imagine he would be able to go on and do the same sorts of things that lead to what happened again.

Jack might hide his true emotional state from the Doctor (and I think he's had reasons he might want to do that for a good while), but I expect TW to deal with the consequences. And yet, I don't, because I expect a load more cop-outs and FAIL, basically, which is why I'm not thrilled about more TW.

I'm going to change my theory to this: Jack will be happy in DW, because there's going to be a big reset and CoE will never have happened. Jack will walk Harriet Jones home, and then go back to Cardiff, where it's 2006 again.

LoL, that's a lovely thought. 2006 FTW

Oh yes, lovely Harriet Jones. I love this idea.

I'm sort of hoping that the DW finale takes place before CoE, timeline wise. Unless they explictly contradict that somehow, I think that's going to be my persnoal canon.
